ABOUT


Annie Leibovitz was born on Oct 2, 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut, U.S . She is still currently living today at the age of 66. Her father was in the U.S. Air Force and the family moved around several times as he was assigned to various bases. The family was even stationed in the Philippines for a time during the Vietnam War.Her mother was an instructor of contemporary dance. After some time they ended up moving to San Francisco Art Institute.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Annie Leibovitz was interested in art at a young age. During her vacation in japan she took a great interest in photography and eventually enrolled in photography classes when she returned to San Francisco. Leibovitz spent several months in an Israeli kibbutz where she took numerous photographs. She ended up doing a cover for rolling stone. Leibovitz was known for being a Portrait photographer.

CARRER

Leibovitz took a photo of Lennon nude with ono dressed in black. Rolling Stone used the photo on the cover of the issue commemorating Lennon. This was later voted best magazine cover from the previous 40 years. The Library of Congress awarded Annie Leibovitz with the “Living Legend”. (to honor artists, writers, activists, filmmakers, physicians, entertainers, sports figures and public servants who have made awesome contributions to America's diverse cultural) French government also made her a Commander of Order of Arts and Letters. (Its purpose is the recognition of significant contributions to the arts ,and literature)

OTHER IMPORTANT FACTS

1) In 1978, she became the first female to take pictures of Joan Armatrading for To the Limit, his album. After 2 years, she took photos of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for the Rolling Stone magazine. She was the last to photograph him professionally before he was shot dead.
2) In 2007, she was hired by The Walt Disney Company to take a series of pictures of celebrities posing in different scenes and roles for a Disney Park‘s campaign, Year of a Million Dreams.
