FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Happy Friday Hawkins Families,

I can’t believe I am writing my Friday notes for the final newsletter of the school year. This has been an amazing year. Our test scores show it, parent comments show it, and all of the smiling children’s faces show it. We have had our bumps, but I feel that we have worked through it together. We added 13 new staff members this year, and I don’t feel like we missed a beat. I am so proud of the entire Hawkins family, and can’t wait to see what the future holds. I want to give a huge thank you to our PTO and for all of the parents that stepped up to make all of our events this year amazing. I would also like to thank the PTO and all the parent volunteers who helped make field day a great day for Hawkins students. We will take some time to relax and recharge, and come back ready to make next year the best year ever. We have a lot going on next week, please keep close track of your classroom newsletters for details. A safety reminder that neighbors, friends or family members need your tag to pick up, if not they will be sent to the office to have their ID run. If you have medicine at school please pick it up before the last day of school. Any leftover medication will be discarded. A few reminders from the transportation:

  • Please take home items from your locker before the last day of school. On the last day everything must fit in your lap.

  • No guest riders after school

  • No glass items on the bus

  • No animals or “class pets” on the bus

Have a wonderful summer, email me anytime if you have questions. I will reach out to all of you again when I return in August.

Summer of Fun

Keep students engaged in learning over the summer. The Michigan Learning Channel’s 8-week summer program has everything kids need to continue building their brains and learning key concepts that will help them succeed in school. From junior kindergarten to 6th grade, each grade has 2-3 hours of video lessons per week, plus a fun and interactive activity book. Local events and special broadcasts around our 8 weekly themes help pique kids’ interest. All programs are available on broadcast television and on-demand online.

Each building will have a limited number of activity books available for interested families (or they can be downloaded/printed at home). They will be able to be picked up in the main office during the last week of school or the first week of summer.

Kids Read Now

BAS is partnering with Kids Read Now to mail eight free books to each current kindergartener over the summer. Books that they can keep forever! Kindergarten families will be receiving a postcard in the mail soon from Kids Read Now, and their first book will be sent out the 3rd week of June.

Books will arrive every 8-10 days and will include a discovery sheet on the inside cover with activities and instructions on how to report each book read. Students who read and report each book will receive a certificate and an additional book in the Fall. Weekly tips and reminders will be sent to each student’s primary contact (as listed in Parent Connect). Please see the parent guide for more information on the program, including how to join the Kids Read Now parent portal, report books, and access additional resources.

Attention, 4th Grade Families! Mark your calendars!

Maltby Intermediate 5th Grade Orientation is scheduled for August 22nd, and 6th Grade Orientation is scheduled for August 23rd. Both will run from 9am to 1pm in an Open House format, so you will not need to be here the whole time. School pictures will be taken that day for the yearbook as well as ID badges, so have your student picture day ready! This is also when your student will receive their teacher, schedule, and locker assignments, and be able to purchase Maltby gear as well as pre-order the 2023-2024 Maltby yearbook. We look forward to seeing you there!
