Dear Hawk Nation,
This communication is meant to provide a preview of many things to come. First we would like to welcome all of the new families and students to Horning Middle School, we can’t wait to meet you. For all of you returning, we can’t wait to see you again. As you know Horning MIddle School is under construction. We look forward to sharing this new beautiful space with you very soon.
With the many uncertainties of what is to come we wanted to provide updates as to where we are in the planning for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year events. Please use the website for ongoing updates and important information, https://sdw.waukesha.k12.wi.us/horningms
Here are updates specific to Horning Middle School:
6th Grade Student/Family and New Student/Family Orientation:
At this time our face to face and new student orientation event has been cancelled. This was not an easy decision to make as we know how important this is in the transition to a new school. This has always been a great time to see everyone, meet new families, answer questions, provide time to explore the building, gather the Horning community, and share in the excitement of a new school year. In efforts to alleviate some angst, our Student Services team is working on creating a virtual orientation. Although not the same as in person, this will provide information, answer questions you may have, and provide you with important resources. As soon as this is created we will be sending it out to our families and students. Please look for further communication on this.
With the cancellation of New Student Orientation we have adjusted what typically happens during those days:
School Fees: typically paid at orientation time, however this will not be possible at this time. Once assessed, fees can be paid online through Infinite Campus
Locks for street lockers will be provided by Horning Middle School. Due to the current construction taking place at Horning, timeline around locker assignments will take place at later date
Student pictures - Picture dates have been established for October 2nd during the school day
Physical Education uniform: will not be required at this time. Please look for additional information on this
Thank you for your ongoing patience and flexibility as we navigate these uncertain times. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

The School District of Waukesha's Annual Registration needs to be completed online in Infinite Campus via the instructions listed on our website. This information will be on our website very soon, https://sdw.waukesha.k12.wi.us/horningms.
Items that you will find online include:
- Verification of household information (please review carefully)
- Updating of health information
- Payment of Student Fees
- Students schedules
Please complete the online registration process as soon as possible as it is critically important that we have updated and accurate information. Due to the ongoing COVID 19 situation it is essential that emergency contact information is updated.
Free and Reduced lunch forms can be found here.
**Please note that for the 2020-21 school year, registration and fee payment will be entirely online. We will NOT be holding a physical/in-person registration/fee payment day on site at Horning.
Other Important Changes for the 2020-21 School Year
1. Parent Information Night, August 27th, 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. We are working on plans for Parent Information Night. This will be held in an online format as you connect your students' house team and other teachers. Information will be communicated as soon as plans are in place.
2. Lockers: Due to construction and ongoing COVID-19 situation, lockers will not be available right away at the beginning of the school year. If this is the case, students will carry their items with them in their backpacks until a locker can be assigned.
3. Locks: Locks will not be purchased by students this year. Rather, they will be rented for the year for a $1.00 fee, which will be included in your registration fee. Locks will be assigned to students along with their lockers, and will be returned to Horning at the end of the school year.
4. Physical Education Uniforms and Locks: As of now, students will not be using the gym locker rooms or changing for gym class. Therefore, we are NOT requiring the purchase of gym shirts or gym locks, at least for the first semester. Students will be required to wear proper gym shoes to class.
Meet the New HMS Staff
My name is Andrew Bartel. I'm am very excited to be joining the Horning team as a physical education and SDPE teacher. Previously I taught in Racine Unified School District for 5 years, 3 years at Case High School and 2 years at Mitchell Middle School. I graduated from Carthage College with a bachelor in physical education, health, and SDPE and a few years later with a Masters in Educational Administration.
My wife and I got married this past October in Cabo San Lucas. We travel whenever we can. We're both scuba certified and love spending time by the ocean.
My husband Gerardo, a dual language teacher in the district, and I have two daughters, Lila “Leelah” (11) and Lucía (9). We enjoy spending time with family and friends, being outdoors, listening to music, biking, swimming, traveling, eating good food, and watching movies. I look forward to meeting and working with you all!
