What's Happening ?? !!
~ Hawley Newsletter ~ March 11, 2018 ~
From the Desk of Mr. Moretti
Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians,
Here's What is Happening at Hawley.......
- Last Day of School/April Vacation: The missed number of days due to weather was more than anticipated and there is a possibility of more on the way. Dr. Rodrigue will be discussing the situation with the BoE and communicating decisions regarding dates shortly. Hold On for Now!!!
- I have updated my Principal's Message with thoughts and information about the challenges of parenting today. It can be found on our Website then Parents Tab or by clicking here.
- PTA Book Fair was a terrific success. Thank you to everyone for their flexibility with schedules impacted by snow. Despite missed days, it went off without a hitch.
- Student Progress Reports are available now on the ParentPortal. Please let us know if you are having difficulty accessing them.
- STEAM Night: This fun evening will be here before you know it (April 26). This is a great opportunity to share a talent and interest while getting involved. Any parent/guardian or relative that has a STEAM related activity that they would consider presenting this evening, please contact Amy Hiruo at hiruoa@newtown.k12.ct.us
- Thank you PTA for the food during Conferences. It was greatly appreciated.
- Concert dates were scheduled shortly after Mr. Nanavaty joined us and put on the District Calendar (4/4 and 5/2). Information from him will be going home shortly.
Communication & Parent Support
I am still surprised in the amount of calls we get asking questions regarding information that has gone home many times and in many forms. I try to overlook it until 15 students are returned to school on Early Dismissal days because there is no one at the bus stop to meet them with people saying they were unaware that it was an Early Dismissal. Also, when only 63% of parents have opened their child's Progress Reports on the ParentPortal.
Your support in our work is needed and appreciated. Your involvement in your child's education is vital.
- Please know what modes of communication are available to you
- Please make sure we have the most updated information in PowerSchool so you are receiving the information
- Please take the time to review the information sent home
- And please document the information for future use.
As always, if you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to give me a call.
Pennies For Patients: Extended
Hawley School’s Student Council would like to extend “Pennies for Patients” until March 29, 2018. The break in our schedule due to weather has limited our collections and the students want to have the opportunity to reach their goal.
Please continue to collect and send in your spare change. The box can be filled and brought to school as many times as necessary. If you prefer, online donations can be made by using this link:
http://events.lls.org/pages/ctwhv/HawleyElementarySchool-2018 .
If Hawley School reaches its goal ($2,000), every student will earn an extra recess! The class with the highest total will also receive a reward.
“Pennies for Patients” is a program run by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that helps to raise funds for life-saving cancer research.
Thank you for helping to support such a worthy cause. If you have any questions, please contact Jenna Connors, Lead Teacher, at connorsj@newtown.k12.ct.us.
Book Fair: Terrific!
Book Swap & Donation
On Tuesday, April 10th we are going to have our 3rd annual Hawley Book Swap and Book Donation in the Multi-Purpose room. On this day, classes will come together in the MPR to pick out previously-owned books. Students will be able to label their “new” book and bring it home in celebration of all things reading!
To make this event such a success, we are asking for your help:
In your Spring Cleaning efforts, please set aside any of your gently used books that you would like to donate. (Please be sure donated books are clean from markings or torn/ripped pages.) All gently used books can be dropped off in the boxes at the front of the school or on the stage in the Multipurpose room anytime leading up to Literacy Week (April 9th-13th). Books will then be sorted by grade level and placed on tables for student selection the day of the book swap. All remaining books will be donated to a nearby school with limited resources.
Questions/concerns: don’t hesitate to write me an email, wasleys@newtown.k12.ct.us. Thanks so much for your support of this event and all your continued support of library events!!

Out of the Mouths of Babes........
Mr. M entered a room.
"Look at all the green" Mr. M said.
"It's St. Patrick's Day." responded a student
"What are you all making?" asked Mr. M
"Leprechauns!" the students shouted
"My Leprechaun likes to be in the backyard with his wife." Mr. M teased
To which a student replied, "What is his wife's name?"
"Patty O' Furniture"
