Gladstone School Newsletter - Week 10 Term 3, 2021. 24/9/21.
Te Karere a te Tumuaki (Principal's Message)
Kia ora tātou katoa (Hi/greetings/hello everybody). It is hard to believe that we are at the end of term 3 already. The year is certainly disappearing quickly. We hope that you all enjoy some mental down-time and rest before we head into term 4. Keep an eye on the app over the holidays as we will be updating you on decisions around Pet Day and the Fair.
This week is 'Mental Health Awareness Week'. This year’s focus is ‘Mā te kōrero, ka ora’ (take time to talk). In the words of Iona Holsted from the MoE "I encourage you all to do just that - whether it’s checking in with a friend or colleague, having a kōrero over some kai, or saying hello to a stranger. Everyday conversations create connection".
Thanks so much to the helpers who masked up to sort the pie orders yesterday, to Liz and Kirstan for sorting the orders and to everyone who purchased pies. At first count it looks like we made approximately $1,000 - this is fantastic. Thanks also to the Williams and Gardner families for donating straw/hay for our scarecrow making. We got through it under level 2 and think our tamariki (children) did super well. We appreciate families organising gear and equipment to enable this to happen. Great work to Ōnoke for supporting the younger students - your leadership shone through.
If you haven't done so already, please take a few minutes over the holidays to complete our 2021 BoT Survey - the link is below.
Ngā manaakitanga,

Hui (Assembly)
Week 10 Kaitiakitanga Focus (sorry I mucked that up last week in the newsletter, the W9 focus was Ako).
Kaitiakitanga (k'eye tea ah key tongue ah) - is care and guardianship, that is correct. It can be the care and guardianship of land, the environment, people, places.
Tanga is the act of doing something and a Kaitiaki is a guardian or protector of something.
Kaitiakitanga Certificates
Congratulations to the following students who received certificates at this week's assembly: Māhinarangi Rutene; Enzo Fuller; Isla Blackwood; Archie Ashby; Arthur Wildy; Evie Dick & Wyatt Halliday. Ka pai.
Whetu o te Wiki (Star of the Week)
Kā rawe (awesome) to our star of the week - Zoe Cates. Zoe is doing an outstanding job of weaving te reo Māori into her everyday language and learning tasks. Well done, it really warms our hearts to see this happening.

Rā Whānau (Happy Birthday)
Ruamahanga Restoration Trust
It was lovely to have a visit from the Ruamahanga Restoration Trust this week. The trust provided funding to the tune of $3,500 earlier in the year so we could plant along our water way and along the bike tracks leading to the water way.
Scarecrow Fair Plant Stall
Spring has finally arrived, and with only six more weeks until the fair it’s time to get potting! There will be a stack of pots outside the school office, so help yourself if you’re planning on spending some time in the garden over the holidays. Contact Kat on 022 425 7760 if you need some potting mix or would like a hand with potting up. Any and all plants sell well - indoor plants, herbs, fruit and veges, natives, grasses, perennials or annuals - we’ll take any you can spare!

It might be good to also pop a reminder in about scarecrow making at home…

Reminder: Pet Day - Thursday 21st October (if at alert level 1)
We have altered the organisation of this year's Pet Day. We have had quite a bit of feedback that the afternoon is too hot for the animals. In light of this we have decided to start Pet Day judging at 9:30 am on Thursday the 21st of October. Students will go to class at 9:00 am to do the role and then will come out to sort pets ready for judging. Categories and an order of events is being sent home on Monday.
There will be a bake sale for morning tea and (hopefully) a coffee cart. We will also run the usual sausage sizzle from 10:30 am onwards and anticipate that the event will finish around 12:30pm. Students are welcome to go home with parents/caregivers at this time or are equally as welcome to stay on at school until 3pm. Busses home will be running as usual on this day at 3pm.
Please note that sand trays will only be for those students who are not bringing a pet. They will be made at school starting at 9:30 am in the hall followed by judging at approx 11:00 am.
