Broadway Star Pennsbury Alumna Teaches Masterclass to Students
On Monday, May 1, Pennsbury alumna and Broadway star Christy Altomare conducted a masterclass with the fifth-grade chorus of Quarry Hill Elementary School. For several years, Ms. Altomare starred as the title role of Anya in the world-premiere of the musical adaptation of the animated film Anastasia on Broadway in New York City.
The Quarry Hill chorus sang two songs from Anastasia in two-part arrangements, titled "Once Upon a December" and "Journey to the Past." The masterclass helped prepare the fifth-grade students for their upcoming spring concert. Ms. Altomare worked with student soloists Brady Haft, Moriah Ahia, Sienna Pabers, and Elsa Ruland on their performance and added some simple choreography. In addition, Ms. Altomare performed "Crossing a Bridge" from Anastasia for the Quarry Hill students, accompanied by pianist Mrs. Leone Lee. Following her performance, she had a question and answer session for the students.
Ms. Altomare signed autographs for those interested and hosted "Breakfast with a Broadway Star" for students selected in a special raffle. This wonderful program was made possible by a Pennsbury Arts Foundation grant that vocal music teacher Mrs. Jennifer Stephens was awarded. The Pennsbury Arts Foundation has distributed over $97,000 during the past 23 years, supporting the arts and teachers' curricula throughout the Pennsbury School District.

Bucks County Crime Scene Truck Visits PHS
Students enrolled in Biology 2 at Pennsbury High School West recently learned the processes and procedures for collecting DNA and preserving a crime scene. Detectives Phil Kulana and Dante Montella with the Bucks County District Attorney's Office visited the school on Wednesday, May 10, and brought the Bucks County Crime SceneTruck. The truck contains all the necessary equipment for detectives to collect and preserve evidence and send it to forensic scientists to examine.
Students learned about collecting fingerprints, casting footprints and tire marks, how UV lights are used to look for different biological specimens, such as blood and urine, and how bugs and organisms can determine how long a body may have been decomposing. They also learned how to photograph a crime scene, establish a timeline of suspects, and how mobile devices and social media can provide a treasure trove of evidence for detectives.
Thanks to Detectives Kulan and Montella from the Bucks County District Attorney's Office for this informative presentation.
Bee an Engineer at Quarry Hill
This spring at Quarry Hill Elementary School, SPARK teacher Rebecca Obert-Thorn and her third grade students participated in an educational program through The Planet Bee Foundation, whose goal is to cultivate the green leaders of tomorrow through the power of science and stewardship.
Mrs. Obert-Thorn's students have been learning about form and function in nature as a way to view how the shape of objects determines its use. The pollination process, germination, and biomimicry inspired their STEM challenges in class. For example, students designed a pollinator prototype that was able to transfer pollen (orange jello-mix) from flower to flower.
The Planet Bee Foundation helped take things a step further this year. The students were treated to a real-time virtual STEM lesson with an entomologist, who taught them all about the importance of bees to our food systems and ecosystems as a pathway to conservation and STEM fields. As a follow-up to this presentation, classes engineered native bee habitats to take home as part of the Native Bee Citizen Science Project.
Through a grant with the Planet Bee Foundation and Giant food stores, Obert-Thorn's students were gifted with northeast wildflower seeds and the materials to make seed bombs to plant on Quarry Hill's school grounds, and to give to someone special.

BELT Committee Presentations at Quarry Hill
Recently, the Quarry Hill Elementary BELT Committee planned presentations for students to increase their awareness of Developmental Disabilities and Autism. BELT Stands for Building Equity Leadership Team. Quarry Hill's BELT Liaison is second grade teacher Mrs. Kim Matthews.
The committee sent out a BELT survey asking parents and students if they would be interested in coming to school to share their experiences living with a Developmental Disability, and the following students and parents volunteered:
- Fifth-grader Rocco DiPalma gave a class presentation to kindergartners about deafness, cerebral palsy, and learning differences.
- Jessica Elrath, mother of first-grader Jackson, taught a Band-Aid Lesson to the first-graders. The central message of the Band-Aid Lesson is that "fair is not always equal."
- Beverly Duke, mother of kindergartener Amelia and second-grader Cayden, presented to the second grade about living with Type 1 Diabetes.
- Julie Allsman and Sabrina Ahia, along with their children Desmond (4th), Jack (K), Moriah (5th), and Annalise (2nd), presented to grades 3, 4, and 5 about their experiences living with Autism.
Thank you to these amazing volunteers for taking the time out of their day to help teach valuable, important information to our students.
The Fallsington Tiger has a Name!
Fallsington Elementary School is so excited to announce that their school mascot has been given a name! After narrowing the name choices down to five from numerous amazing entries, the staff and students voted and the winning name was....Stripes!
Stripes was suggested by Kindergarteners Cara Cyran, Claire Karczewski, Michael Callahan, Hope Gilmore, and Amelia Cortes, as well as 3rd-grader Ashlyn Gallagher and 5th-grader Mollee Mason. The winning students received the first official t-shirt with the tiger’s name on it. Next time you are at Fallsington, say hello to Stripes!
E is for Exercise!
Penn Valley Elementary is celebrating the last 26 days of school with an ABC Countdown. Each day, there is a fun alphabet-themed activity for that day's letter. Today was E for Exercise!
To celebrate, students got up and moved by doing push-ups, dancing, walking, and more! This morning before school, students exercised along to the song "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John. 💪 Only 21 days (and letters) to go!
