Safe Pickerington Presentation
At 7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 27, we will present Safe Pickerington, an informational session where our community can learn about safety in Pickerington Schools. This one-hour presentation at the Pickerington High School North PAC will include:
· an overview by me, Superintendent Chris Briggs, about school security, recent issues we have had in our buildings, and what steps we are taking as a district to provide the safest educational environments possible;
· information and advice from our partners at Pickerington Police Department, Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, and Pickerington Fire Department;
· a look at some of the safety and security measures we have in place in our buildings, as well as an overview of what kind of training and drills we provide to our staff and students;
· information on how to help children manage issues and the resulting anxiety; and
· advice for parents about the roles they can play in partnering with the schools to ensure our children are safe.
This program is free and open to our community. We encourage parents to attend.
See or Hear Something....SAY SOMETHING
Yesterday, it was reported immediately to the administration that there was a post on social media that was of concern. We immediately checked into the matter and made the necessary phone calls. Please know that at no time was there ever a concern or threat to Lakeview or any Pickerington school. The post was made by another student, outside of the district, and then the post was shared by another student that is also not a Pickerington student, but at one time was, so that is how it quickly spread throughout our building. We made the necessary contacts to alert anyone that needed to know or have this information.
We did announce around 11:00 yesterday that we were aware of this post and that we had things under control. At this point, more and more students were reporting their concerns to their teachers and the office. During this announcements, we also, reassured students that the appropriate personnel were contacted. Additionally, we reminded students that if they are to see things like this, they should never share them on their own social media pages, as they could just as well get in trouble for creating a disruption. The students that reported it to the office at 7:15, did the right thing. They didn't show other students the post and they didn't share it on their social media. They saw something and they told someone. That is exactly what needs to happen. Unfortunately, there were other students that did share the post both on their page or just showed the post to others. That type of reaction is not productive and usually only results in panic and concern. Please continue to talk with your student about what they should do if they see something of concern, and what is not appropriate.
