Message from Dayle
The beginning of the year always offers promise and excitement and hope about what we can offer in students' experiences and learning. Working with students in an educational setting is not for the faint of heart- it is a profession that simply must be a calling because it isn't for the salary, or the glory, or for the public praise that we choose to do this work. Staff invest in students because we want to make a difference for the individual kids we serve.
And, we need you ALL in if we are going to make that difference.
Last week Jimmy Casas spoke to us at the Summer Summit. One of the things he said was, "It's a job when you believe you can't make a difference."
My challenge to you is don't let your role in HSD be a job this year. Make a difference. We sincerely won't be better for students unless we improve. Share a new idea, make an impactful connection with a student or two, propose an out of the box idea and find a way to implement it in your setting, take a risk in instruction, learn something new to improve your practice- but make a difference!
HSD Focus 2017-2018
INSTRUCTION: Language and Rigor
We are committed to staying focused on these two areas in classroom observations this year and supporting you with the skills you need to feel confident with language teaching, scaffolds and rigor to ensure student success.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: Greet Me!
Building relationships is key to student success. Check out this great resource for greeting your students or use it with students to discuss how you would like to greet each other each day. (If you choose presentation mode, it is easier to get the videos to run.)
CAREER & COLLEGE READY: HS Graduation an College and Career Readiness Act (aka Measure 98)
With Measure 98--also known as the High School Graduation and College and Career Readiness Act of 2016--passing by a two-thirds majority of Oregon voters last fall, we are planning additional CTE programming at each of our high schools. Examples are construction technologies at Glencoe High School, sustainable agriculture and design at Liberty High School, biomedical technologies at Hillsboro High School, microelectronics at Century High School, and criminal justice and law at Hillsboro Online Academy. In addition, we are developing innovative opportunities outside of brick-and-mortar schools. Our partnership with FirstTech Credit Union, for example, will have Hillsboro School District students interning at FirstTech’s new headquarters in the summer of 2018. If the HillsboroSchool District is successful in passing a capital construction bond in November of 2017, CTE construction, renovation, and technology investment would allow us to further expand CTE offerings to students. Our bond planning team--co-chaired by Chamber President Deanna Palm and former Mayor Jerry Willey--included higher education partners, business partners, students, and parents who all agree that expanded CTE opportunities will equate to more choice and more viable pathways for today’s students. For a detailed list of project proposed within the bond program, explore our website at: www.Hillsboro-Bond.org. This is an exciting time for business partners to volunteer, sponsor programs, and host student interns. For more information on internship opportunities, explore our internship portal: https://www.hsd.k12.or.us/Page/191. We offered 51 additional PD sessions throughout the summer in order to provide opportunities for collaboration, learning and curriculum articulation for approximately 1,000 participants! Most sessions were led by teachers leaders and others were led in collaboration with AVID, the Center of Applied Linguistics, Portland State University and Karen Beeman. In addition, All K-8 teachers and specialists received training with our new Amplify curriculum. We are very grateful to all of you who led and attended these opportunities and encourage you to share your learning with your colleagues!
