Meadow Park News
August 25th, 2018
Principal's Corner
What an amazing turnout at the Ice Cream Social! Thank you so much for being here, meeting our fabulous staff, and taking a tour of the building. We went through over 800 ice cream bars and popsicles and I heard from many parents how thankful they were to meet teachers and run through their student's schedule. We have a couple improvements in mind for next year and look forward to making this an annual tradition at the Park!
Our staff has been hard at work preparing to welcome students into the building on the first day. The stated mission of Meadow Park is "We empower all students to be collaborative, courageous, and caring in their social and academic lives." As a staff, we spent our first week diving into exactly what it means to empower students and how each of us can contribute to our mission in order to improve student outcomes. Now, it is almost time to put that learning into action.
On Monday, August 27th we welcome 6th grade only to the building. On Tuesday, August 28th we will have all students back. Please note that Wednesday, August 29th we will be having a full day of school and release students at 3:50. Early release Wednesday will begin on Wednesday, September 5th with students releasing at 2:20 every Wednesday thereafter.
If you pickup your student after school, here’s a map of how we organize student pickup. If your student is being picked up, please make sure to use the entrance between the apartment buildings of Butner rather than the entry off Downing. The entry and exit off Downing are reserved for bus use!
As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns. We can't wait to meet our 6th graders and welcome everyone else back to Meadow Park for the 2018-2019 school year.
Let's make it a great year!

Volunteers from VBC
Thanks for the Plants, Peak Landscape, Inc!
Thank you Peak Landscape, Inc & Village Baptist Church!
It hasn’t only been our staff who are hard at work and preparing for the arrival of new students. On Saturday, August 18th volunteers from Village Baptist Church and even some of our own students and families arrived at school early in the morning and did an amazing amount of work. Peak Landscape donated an amazing amount of plants that were used to beautify the front of the school and are designed to be drought tolerant for those summer months where we don't water. Thank you so much to both Peak Landscape and Village Baptist!
If you are interested in hearing about opportunities to volunteer at Meadow Park throughout the year, I encourage you to fill out the volunteer form on the Meadow Park PTO web page.

Technology Use During School Hours
Just a reminder that Meadow Park is an “off and away” school. This means students will be allowed to bring their phones to school, however during school hours they are to keep them off and put them away in a safe place. This decreases distractions and ensures that students are fully engaged throughout the day. If students need to call home, they will always have access to a phone in the health room or main office. If you need to contact your student urgently, please call the office (503-356-2640) and we will get them a message right away. We appreciate your support with this, as this is an area where sometimes students need clear expectations.
Continuing with the technology topic, here is a link to a great article on screen time and teenagers. We hope you find this article informative and relevant as a parent, especially with technology being present in every part of our lives.
Chromebooks are coming the first week!
- Chromebooks will be distributed the first week of school during science classes as follows: 8th grade will receive Chromebooks on Wednesday, 7th grade will receive Chromebooks on Thursday, and 6th grade will receive Chromebooks on Friday.
- VERY IMPORTANT: Please make sure that you have filled out the Chromebook Damage/Loss Form and paid your $20 Insurance Fee. Please return completed forms and fees to the front office.
- Bring your Chromebook case on the day of distribution
- Chromebooks are part of school provided supplies. We will go over rules and expectations to ensure they are being used responsibly and as a tool for learning.
- In an effort to decrease opportunities for risk of damage to our Chromebooks and avoid Chromebooks being used in a manner that is not consistent with district policy, we will ask that students use them only during class time when directed by their teachers.
- Students will be allowed to take their Chromebooks home. We ask that you remind your student to charge them every night and handle them with care.
Plan your "Safe Route to School!"
As we all know, traffic in and around our school is chaotic at arrival and dismissal times. The roads and school parking lots cannot handle the volume of cars typically dropping off and picking up students. The majority of BSD students are in the walk/bike zone or are offered bus service to their school. PLEASE spend some time before school starts finding a safe walk or bike route to school or your bus stop.
Check out BSD's flyer for tips on being a responsible road user, whatever travel mode you choose. Safety is everyone’s responsibility: keep your eyes open, look out for each other and help everyone arrive to school safely. You can help make the route to school safe for everyone.
