Trident Pānui
Term 3, Week 10
Principal's Message
As we come to the end of term three we celebrate the hard work and commitment shown by students towards their learning. Our assembly today celebrated those students who persevere in coming to school and attending every lesson, and those students who are pushing themselves academically to gain Merit or Excellence endorsement. In both these areas - attendance and academic progress - attitude is key and we were pleased to recognise students’ success in this full school assembly.
For our seniors the break now will be a welcome relief after the work towards the benchmark exams. Congratulations to those students who prepared for and attended their benchmarks. They are showing a desire to succeed to their potential and make the most of the learning opportunities provided. They have enough time between the benchmarks and the NCEA externals to put the feedback they gain from teachers to good use and polish their performance. Talk through their results with them and help them to put a plan in place to revise and practice for the real externals. External exams are a great way of preparing for tertiary study and for setting personal goals to challenge yourself to attempt something difficult but rewarding.
Next term is brief for our seniors with Senior Prize-Giving on November 1st, Wednesday of week 4. Course completion and course endorsement should be central to their planning and finishing of the year. For our Year 12 and 13 students there is the added excitement of the Senior Masquerade Ball when they have the opportunity to celebrate their years at Trident in this significant social event. With the privilege of attending comes responsibilities and these include attendance and fees paid before the ball. This year the Year 13 students are also producing the school year book which will be dedicated to their time at the school. Every Year 13 student has an opportunity to contribute to the Year Book which will make an excellent memento of their times at Trident.
Our senior students for 2024 have completed their subject selection planning and have chosen their subjects for next year. If you need further help or support for your student in completing this, please make contact with the Whānau Ako teacher, Dean or DP for Senior Curriculum Mrs Mays. The early completion of subject selection allows the timetable and staffing for next year to begin which supports the school being able to respond well to the choices students make. Our Year 9 students will have the chance to complete their subject selection early next term.
On a serious note, this term we have twice had to run an emergency fire evacuation and put learning on hold when students deliberately set the alarms. Everyone is impacted by this, including our SEC students who find the disturbance distressing. Nine firemen left their work spaces to attend the emergency evacuation on Wednesday and brought two fire trucks, which were therefore unavailable for anyone in town who really needed their help in the event of a car accident or real fire. The enormity of the disturbance to our Whakatāne community created by the thoughtless actions of a couple of our students, should not be underestimated. These actions will be treated with the utmost seriousness when students are found to have set the alarms as a prank, and I would appreciate it if you discussed at home the danger inherent in this behaviour. Students are literally putting members of the Whakatāne community in danger and this behaviour will not be tolerated. If a student intentionally pulls the fire alarm, they will be charged $400 as each time the alarm is activated, the security company charges us a $400 reset fee.
After a busy term with the production, Winter tournament week, the NCEA benchmarks and numerous other opportunities and challenges I am sure all of our students are ready for a break and the chance to spend some time with whānau. I wish you all a peaceful and sunny break from school and hope whānau enjoy having this time together.

The Adventure Challenge Camp consisted of many fun and challenging activities. We competed in an Academy Tough Guy & Gal Adventure challenge, a 20km MTB ride, and a 10km run, as well as many other smaller challenges, with the aim of winning the Service Academy Adventure Challenge Shield.
We also went Zip Lining and Mountain Biking in the Redwoods. It was great to mix and mingle with all the other Academies and Defence Force Staff in a less formal environment.
At the conclusion of the camp, Trident Service Academy was awarded first place. The camp was a great experience, and we loved being a part of the Academy community, making new friends, and going out of our comfort zones. - Marian Williams
