September is Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Awareness Month. According to the American Foundation
for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United
States. Many of us have been impacted by suicide, and many of us (children
included) may struggle with suicidal or depressive thoughts. The good news is
that death by suicide is preventable. As parents, caregivers, and school staff, we
must understand that not all emotional pain is obvious, and there are important
steps we can take to support our children and families’ mental wellness. First, we
must recognize the warning signs. Pay attention to the things your child or family
member may be saying, such as talking about death or suicide or making
statements about not wanting to live. Notice changes in behavior such as the
child or family member seeking methods of self-harm, feeling hopeless or not
wanting to live, changes in sleep, sudden mood changes, reckless behavior,
substance abuse, giving away belongings, or increased anxiety or agitation. Next,
we must talk about it. Many people would rather avoid the topic, but talking
about suicide is an important step in prevention! Click here to read more!
