A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Members of the AUSD Community,

On Tuesday, the State of California announced that Riverside County advanced into the state’s Orange Tier. Shortly thereafter, Governor Newsom and state health officials announced that California aims to fully reopen the economy on June 15. That's great news on both fronts. Below is a 2-minute and 24-second video about Orange Tier restrictions from Riverside County Director of Public Health Kim Saruwatari.

Orange Tier by PH Director Kim Saruwatari.mp4

Now that Riverside County is in the Orange Tier, the spectator capacity at large school events such as graduation increases. As I announced last week, we intend to send off our seniors with all of the pomp and circumstance fitting such a momentous occasion. The number of guest tickets student will receive will depend on the size of the senior class and the color-coded tier we are in at that time. High schools will communicate graduation details to their senior class.

The Governor also announced this past week that he expects all schools at all levels to reopen to full in-person instruction after June 15.

THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS THIS WEEK...

Will the state need to be fully reopened for schools to fully reopen?
Schools will be able to fully reopen based on meeting whatever criteria the California Department of Public Health stipulates as a requirement for reopening fully, such as 3-feet of distancing, masking, and other safety measures. It will not be directly dependent on the state fully reopening the economy.

Will families have the option of remaining in a distance learning program next school year?
Yes. We will conduct an interest-survey the week of April 19. Look for an email from your principal. The programs we offer will depend on our students' and their families' interests. The 2021-22 school year starts on August 6.

Why do I have to decide in April what program I want when school starts on August 6?
You don't have to decide. It's an interest survey at this point in time. It will provide us an idea of what our families are thinking about for next school year. We realize conditions related to COVID, and requirements related to reopening fully, will likely change between April 19 and August 6.

Will summer school be in-person?
Yes. From June 7 to July 15. Assuming the conditions continue to improve.

Will summer school be the same as past years?
No. Summer school has been expanded to all school sites. Smaller class sizes and targeted interventions will focus on learning loss and preparation for 2021-22.

What is the summer school schedule?
See below.
