Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year!
In response to the parent survey sent out last spring, LES will be sending out four newsletters this year- fall, winter, spring and summer. In addition to the newsletter, don't forget that much is communicated through our website (les.hsd.ca), teacher/class blogs and newsletters, the sign outside of our school, direct emails, notes in agendas or through the REMIND app, and voice messaging. Other Announcements
- REMEMBER: NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON THE FOLLOWING DATES: Monday, October 9 - Thanksgiving; Friday, October 20 - Manitoba Teachers' PD Day; Monday, October 30 - HSD Staff PD Day; Monday, November 13 - Report Card Prep Day;
- CLUBS and LUNCH TIME ACTIVITIES: Our teachers are getting ready to introduce some clubs and lunch time activities for our students. Watch and listen for announcements about intramural sports, knitting/crocheting club; GREEN SCREEN club, and more!
- Lost and Found: Did your child lose a coat? How about a lunch box? Make sure they check lost and found first! The lost and found will be emptied on the last day of each month. All items left will be donated to charity.
- BAG UP MANITOBA! For the month of October we will be collecting CLEAN plastic bags for the Bag-Up Manitoba Campaign. This program, where elementary school students are encouraged to collect plastic bags for recycling into birdhouses for their schools, runs throughout the month.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
The Hanover Parent and Child Community Program would like to invite Landmark parents and their preschool children to attend free preschool programming. This program is being provided by the Hanover School Division to promote development of school readiness skills. Children will have the opportunity to play, learn, create, sing and develop skills to prepare them for kindergarten. Parents will be able to visit with other parents, learn parenting skills, and participate in activities with their children. Snacks will be provided. When: School Day Thursdays from 1:15 - 3:15 pm Beginning Sept. 21
Families can attend weekly or just drop in when they can. Cost: FREE Where: Landmark Elementary School PLEASE NOTE: Children should bring indoor footwear. Parents please park in the designated street parking areas.
COMING SOON: Landmark Child Care, Inc.
By the beginning of November, Landmark Child Care, Inc. will be operating a before and after school program in Landmark Elementary School. This program is available to all children who attend LES whose parents are looking for before and/or after school child care. Landmark Elementary School Priorities for 2017-18
Planning Priority #1: OUR KID: To provide a stimulating learning environment where students and staff are active learners who collaborate, explore and connect with the school and wider community.
Strategies and Success Indicators
Increase in use of inquiry approaches, choices in how to demonstrate learning and use of technology in every classroom
A deliberate focus on understanding, developing and assessing collaboration skills
Planning Priority #2: LITERACY: To improve student achievement in language development and communication, including reading, writing and oral speech.
Strategies and Success Indicators
An increased emphasis on the skills in writing impactful expository text, particularly word choice, sentence structure and organization
Integration of the new ELA curriculum
Provision of more early literacy support
Student self-assessment and goal creation regarding writing and/or reading achievement
Planning Priority #3: NUMERACY: To develop in our students a stronger ability to apply proportional reasoning to mathematical problems.
Strategies and Success Indicators
Building a stronger foundation in understanding and ability to extend patterns for the purpose of mathematical problem solving
Provide more opportunity for students to play with patterns, reflect on and communicate their thinking about patterns with peers and adults
Planning Priority #4: ESD and SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: To build the capacity of students to be resilient, socially responsible and respectful in all their relationships, including their relationship with the planet, with the goal of learning to live in a sustainable manner.

Intentional exploration and practice of the values and attitudes listed in the ESD in Manitoba curriculum.
STRONG CONNECTIONS
This annual event took place on September 15th and 18th and was, once again, a great time for teachers and students to build relationships and for teachers to grow their understanding of their students' needs. Make sure you check out Twitter on our website for numerous pics and details!
Cheer on Our X-Country Teams
September 29, the team heads to Steinbach again at 12:10 for a 1:00 run at A.D. Penner Park. Come on out and cheer on our kids!!
