Tips for Communicating
with your Children
When we ask our kids how they are doing we frequently hear one word answers like, "fine",
"OK", etc. It can be helpful to have a communication journal. The child keeps it in their room,
and they can write how they are feeling, and parents can respond in the journal. It is still communication, but the child feels more comfortable writing about what they are doing, what
is going on with them, etc. instead of needing to verbally discuss issues that might be overwhelming for them. It feels safer to write to their parents in this communication book. Also, it is important for all of us to have a schedule while we are at home. The structure of a daily schedule eases anxiety by giving us a sense of control over our time. See the sample schedule below to get you started! Parents can create something of their own, but be sure to include time for breaks, meals, and exercise.
8:00: Wake up, get dressed, eat a healthy breakfast
8:45: Check in with a friend, write down 5 things that bring you gratitude, journal your
thoughts
9:00- 2:00: Sign in to your classes and work on school work. Make sure to do some stretching
every 30 minutes!
Make sure you EAT during your scheduled lunch break: Choose healthy foods with protein,
good fiber, fruit, veggies, etc.
2:00- 3:00: Brain Break- go for a walk, exercise, get outside for some fresh air!
3:00-4:00: Finish up any school work or get help from your teachers
4:00-5:00: Practice instruments, talk with friends, read, draw, try a new recipe, listen
to music, take a shower, spend time on a favorite hobby
5:00-on: Dinner and Family Time
Be sure to get enough sleep! (8-9 hours)
