Supportive Suggestions
This Month's Supportive Suggestion: Organizing a Messy Desk!
This supportive suggestion is aimed at enhancing executive functioning skills through desk organization. Take some time to have students tidy up their messy desks. If you have time, ask your students to list all the steps in order to reorganize a desk (1. Take out items 2. Clean out crumbs/scraps 3. Put loose papers in folders, etc.). When the desks are organized and clean, take a picture of the newly organized desk. This picture can be taped to the top or side of their desk as a visual model for future use. You could even create a classroom wide “blueprint” showcasing a neatly organized desk layout, with commonly used classroom items, that you leave hanging up on the board. This serves as a reference to match their own desks to. Cleaning out a desk may seem like a simple task, but for those that have a hard time with executive functioning might disagree!
