Service Spotlights
North Gwinnett High School had a Serve North week. This was a week-long event designed to honor the clubs/organizations/sports teams who are often overlooked at their school. To recognize these groups, first they selected who they would recognize. Designed as recognizing one per day (Monday-Friday), they selected the band program, the cross country team, Lunch Bunch, the softball team, and the volleyball team. A specific activity was designed each day (i.e. popsicles to cross country team, decorations for the band room), which was not only greatly appreciated, but created many point opportunities for their members. Student council's overall function should be to recognize the student body as a whole, so what better way to do so than by appreciating those organizations that tend to be overlooked by the larger clubs & sports? They hope to expand the event in future years so that they can effectively reach every corner of the school.
District 3:
Freedom Park is in the middle of their annual fundraiser for the Georgia Cancer Center - Augusta University. They are selling "Freedom Park Pink Strong" t-shirts, had a breast cancer walk-a-thon where they collected donations, and had a hat day where students paid $1.00 to wear a hat. All proceeds will go to the GA Cancer Center. ALSO Freedom Park is making plans for the District 3 rally on November 5, 2016. We hope to see District 3 there!
Send a recap of your school's unique service event to gascjournal@gmail.com to be featured in a future Service Spotlight.
Members' Reflection of the SASC Conference, October 14-16, 2016 in Lebanon, Tennessee
During our weekend in Nashville, TN, we learned about the impact that an individual can make and the importance of being passionate about your leadership. I personally learned a lot about other projects and how other student councils are structured. It was a fantastic weekend because we were able to experience Nashville. We toured the Country Music Hall of Fame, ate ice cream downtown, and had a genuine Nashville music experience. We built friendships with other delegates from around the South and look forward to implementing some of the ideas from SASC into GASC.

SASC was a leadership convention that Encompassed 13 southern states. It was a great experience, because I got reunite with old friends and make new ones and also learn different ways to lead. We listen to some great speakers, attended workshops, attended sessions and went through Nashville. I learned that you need to help others out even when it is not the best thing to do and I also learned that I need to let go of things that are stressing me out from the past.
- Avery Ray
SASC was such an amazing leadership experience! Not only did we get to visit the beautiful city of Nashville, but we also were given the opportunity to collaborate with student council kids from Texas to Virginia. The theme of the convention was Tune into Leadership so the entire conference had a music theme. Our host school was very creative and offered us a lot of entertainment such as live performances, food trucks, door prizes, and a hypnotist. The best part of the convention in my opinion was getting to know kids from other states and exchanging ideas that our councils can use to better our schools and communities.

Election Day
As many of you may know our nation is in the waning days of the 2016 presidential election. As leaders in our communities and at home we as GASC Members should always remember that voting is a part of our civic duty! No matter who you support it is important to encourage those around you to get out and vote this upcoming election day. As citizens and leaders, it is our responsibility to encourage and support community participation in government.
Congratulations to our very own Laura Droms for winning 2016 SASC Advisor of the Year!
