Walter Mitty is protrayed as awkward.

"Hey, better leave the key!' 'Oh' said Mitty"

Since he forgot to leave the keys, it was an awkward situation.

"Why don't you wear your gloves? Where are your gloves?"

He is so timid that he cannot say he doesn't want to put on his gloves to her.

"The crew bending their various task in a huge, hurtling eight-engined Navy hydroplane."
