March Federal Publication: Who is at Risk for Flooding?

Every home is at risk for flooding, and it can happen when least expected. In 2011 the Oahe Dam was at peak flood stage, releasing record high level water releases for weeks. The enormous water pressure shook homes, cracked foundations, and burst water pipes. Today people living along the river listen intently to the US Corps weekly reports as upstream melting will soon begin and water releases become more frequent. Homeowners insurance policies rarely cover flood damage.

"Life is not waterproof-Be flood alert," says the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The NFIP is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
