Tip#8: Make Connections
Whether you read to your child, they read to you or it’s a combination of the two one of the most important things you can do while reading is to encourage your new reader to make connections to the story. As a reader you understand the importance of connecting to the topic you’re reading about. As you read ask your child if they have experienced events similar to the ones going on in the text and take a minute to talk about them. Remind them of the time you did something that relates to the events in the book. This is a great way to get them interested in the story and motivated to keep reading. When the story is finished discuss the ways the book was similar and/or different from what they experienced in real life. As always remember our slogan: “Reading 20 minutes before bed really gets your child ahead!”
