Principal's Update ~ November/December 2018
From the Principal's Desk
Greetings Orchard Hill Families!
The time between Thanksgiving and the winter holidays always seems to fly by so quickly! I hope that your recent parent-teacher conferences were productive and that together with your child's teacher future goals for your child were discussed. The next formal progress report will be available in early February and you will receive information on how to access your child's report card through the Genesis/Parent Resources system.
During November, character education lessons focused on the pillar of citizenship. Our school counselors discussed what it means and how it looks to be a good citizen. Did you know we have a pet turtle at OHES? During the election season our counselor, Ms. Vail, organized a school wide vote to name our turtle. The students were very excited to participate and the results are in...our pet turtle has been named SHELDON! Classes enjoy visiting and feeding our special pet.
In December, as a school we will focus on the pillar of trustworthiness. Our school counselors will support this character trait with lessons on what it means to be a trustworthy person. Be sure to look for monthly newsletters that are full of great information from our school counselors, Mrs. Senatra and Ms.Vail.
As the winter holiday season approaches, excitement naturally builds with young children. Our PTA will sponsor the annual Holiday Gift Fair where students have an opportunity to shop for family members or friends. This event provides an opportunity for the children to find that special gift that will bring a smile to the special people in their lives. Stay tuned for more information from the PTA and your child's classroom teacher.
Along with Mr. Van Hise, I wish all of our Orchard Hill families the very best during the upcoming holiday season and a safe, healthy new year in 2019!
Warmest regards,
Mrs. Kathleen Scotti

Bus Safety Reminders
From the moment they step onto the bus in the morning, until their safe arrival back home later in the day, your children are Orchard Hill students. At the beginning of each new year and periodically throughout the year students are reminded of expectations at OHES, the bus being one area of focus. Students learn to follow the A, B, C, D, E of bus safety and behavior.
A: Assigned Seat
Students are assigned a bus seat and should remain there for the duration of the ride.
B: Buckle up
Students should buckle their seat belts and pull the belt snug across their lap.
C: Correct Sitting
Students sit facing forward with their bottoms on the seat and feet to the front.
D: Driver is in Charge
Bus drivers should be treated respectfully and their bus rules be followed. They have a difficult, yet extremely important job - getting our students to and from school safely.
* Stay seated
* Buckle up
* No food or drinks
* Quiet voices
* Respectful language
E: Even on the Bus be a Bucket Filler
Be kind and respectful towards others.
Your assistance in reinforcing these bus riding safety reminders with your children is appreciated!
Winter Weather and Outdoor Recess
The weather is turning colder and children will have outdoor recess unless the temperatures drop below freezing. Please dress your child appropriately and mark your child's outerwear with a name or initials. This makes it easier to reunite clothing with its owner. Be sure to check the Lost and Found located in our cafeteria when visiting school.
Emergency School Closing Information
In the event of inclement weather, hazardous road conditions, or any other emergencies requiring schools to close for one day, phone alerts will be used to notify families. You may also check the following for school closing information due to weather:
- Message Line: 609-466-7610
- District Website: www.mtsd.k12.nj.us
- NJ 101.5 FM
- Channel 27 (Local Access Cable)
In the event of an emergency school closing, the 6-day rotation cycle will remain unchanged. For example, if there is an emergency closing/snow day on Day 1, the following school day will remain Day 2. Missed days will be made up later in the school year. Please refer to the district calendar for details.
