Operation Romania
July 18-28
This Summer
I have been given the amazing opportunity to go to Romania with a team of 13 people from my church on a short-term missions trip. I will be helping to lead a VBS (Vacation Bible School) for the children of a gypsy village and at an orphanage near the city of Oradea. We will also be visiting abandoned babies in a nearby children's hospital and engaging in worship services at a couple gypsy churches. Our team will be working with a missionary family currently living in Romania, the Bucurs, and their parent organization, Pathway to Joy Ministries.
Vacation Bible School?
A VBS is a bible based curriculum that employs crafts, games, skits, snacks, and music to teach children about God in a fun, camp-like atmosphere. My team and I will be using this in the morning at the gypsy village and then again in the afternoon at the orphanage.
The Romani
The gypsy people constitute about 3.3% of the population and are Romania's most socially and economically disadvantaged minority, with high illiteracy levels. The Romani are severely discriminated against. In 2005, the EU launched a project entitled "Decade of Roma Inclusion", a collaboration by 12 European countries to try and improve the socio-economic status and social inclusion of the Romani people. My team and I will be in the gypsy villages reaching out to the children and orphans there.
‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)
