Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 10/31 - 11/4
Happy Halloween and Welcome November!
Fundations:
This week we learned that -ck is only used at the end of one syllable words immediately after short vowels (lick, brick, sick, dock, rock). If a word ends with an /k/ sound and has more than one syllable then we spell it with just -ic. We also learned the new suffixes
-ful, -less, -ment, -ness, -ish, -en, and -able.
Literacy:
This week we focused on what the author's purpose was for writing a story. We know they can write a story to entertain, inform, or to persuade us ( PIE). We realized many books teach us new information and the author's purpose would be to INFORM us. The books that make us laugh or think deeply are the books which the author's purpose was to ENTERTAIN us. The books that may make us make a choice or have us try something new are the books authors write in order to PERSUADE us. Check out the cool video below to learn more about author's purpose.
Math: This week we worked on numbers that were greater than/less than or equal to each other. We had a game station where you rolled three dice and made a number then rolled again and made another number. Then we had to decide which number was the greatest or the least. Sometimes, we even got a numbers that were equal. We also spent lots of time skip counting by 5's, 10's, and 100's. Sounds easy, right? But NOT when you start on "any" number - like 38, 124, etc.! We need to practice this skill. Could be a fun "car game" when you're on a long trip somewhere!
Math Fact Fluency: We have been working very hard in our guided math groups. We are working really hard on telling time. It would be awesome to continue this work at home. If you don't have an analogue clock--it would be a really good idea to get one so your 2nd grader could practice telling time. It could be a wristwatch or a small alarm clock.
Writing Workshop: We continued to write our science Lab Report this week with Ms. Valentour's class. We partnered up and wrote the procedures page, the results page, and the conclusion page. We even added a super-cool cover! We are writing-scientists!!
D.A.R.E.- We had our final D.A.R.E. lesson with Officer Hogan from the Woodridge Police Station today. Ask your child what Officer Hogan taught her/him this week!
