Gradual Release! Part 1
Can teachers help to start the process of student ownership?
I do! We do! You do!
2. We do...interactive
3. You do...collaborative (w/ peers)
4. You do...independent
The gradual release of responsibility model or GRR model is a particular style of teaching which is a structured method of pedagogy framed around a process devolving responsibility within the learning process from the teacher to the eventual independence of the learner.
Teacher Responsibility (Phases 1 and 2)
Phase 1: Focus Lesson
Teacher- Provides direct instruction, establishes goals and purpose, models, and think aloud
Student- Actively listens and asks for clarification
Phase 2: Guided Practice
Teacher- Interactive instruction, works with students, whole group, uses students mistakes to formatively assess
Student- Leads teacher through the process, allowed to make mistakes, completes task alongside others, works with teacher and classmates
