Students gather in Mrs. Akelman’s class to discuss and analyze the intricacies of F. Scott Fitzgeralds classic “The Great Gatsby.”
AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION
Small Group Discussion Chapter 6
Chapter VI
1. Read this quote: “The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God—a phrase which, if it means anything, means just that—and he must be about His Father’s business, the service of a vast, vulgar and meretricious beauty.” (Look up any unfamiliar words.) Explain the following:
the Platonic conception
the effect of the Biblical allusion
Gatsby’s “service”
After interpreting this comment, connect it to this quote from the introduction: “What foul dust floated in the wake of his dream.”
2. Analyze the language in the paragraph beginning “But his heart was in a constant, turbulent riot” and ending with “fairy’s wing.” How does the language create a dream-like world?
3. Explain Gatsby’s attitude toward time.
4. Look at the last three paragraph, beginning with “One autumn night....” Which words contribute to the tone of mysterious excitement established in the first paragraph? Explain the concept of “incarnation” in this passage.
5. What is ideal about Gatsby’s dream? What is corrupt?
MGSD Remains A Top District
The State of North Carolina released its school performance data for the 2016 2017 school year on Thursday, September 07. Mooresville Graded School District once again showed strong academic results with an overall grade-level proficiency of 70.1 percent placing them again at 5th in the state overall out of the 115 public school districts in North Carolina. The state average was 59.2 percent 10.9 points lower than MGSD’s average.
When analyzing the data, the district was pleased with specific results at all levels. MGSD also ranked 5th in the state when combining all North Carolina state End-of-Course scores, which include Math 1, English 10, and Biology. In addition, the 4year cohort graduation rate was at 93.3 percent, placing MGSD at 9th in the state in that category. When combining all End-of-Grade reading, math, and science scores in grades 3 through 8, the district ranked 8th in the state, led by strong performances in 6th grade which ranked 2nd in math and reading, 3rd grade which ranked 5th in math and reading, and 7th grade which ranked 8th in math and reading. As a district, MGSD met 100% of its Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO) targets.
When reflecting on his first year as Superintendent of Mooresville Graded School District and the results of the district, Stephen Mauney said, “I am so proud of the hard work of our MGSD staff and students. We have great work going on at every level in our district. For example, Mooresville High School exceeded expected student academic growth, saw strong performance on its End-of-Course tests, and achieved an outstanding graduation rate all in the midst of a major construction project. Rocky River Elementary earned an A+ school performance grade which is outstanding. These accomplishments demonstrate the uncompromising determination present in staff and students across our district. I believe that MGSD is the best overall district in the state and am honored to be a part of the team that values its place in our community and takes seriously the responsibility that we have to it.”
