Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Gabriela Mistral
Born as Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga in Chile in 1889, poet and educator Gabriela Mistral was the first Hispanic person to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. Although she was no stranger to tragedy, she used her pain to create lasting works of poetry. Throughout her career, Mistral traveled the world as a writer and educator, teaching at Columbia University, Vassar College, and the University of Puerto Rico. She died in New York in 1957, 12 years after winning the Nobel Prize.
Congratulations to Our Touchdown Winners!
Character Trait of the Month
Each month, all of Manavon will focus on a Character Trait of the Month. These are all qualities that make a positive school community and successful individual members of that community. During October, teachers will talk about empathy. Having empathy means being able to understand how someone else feels. Throughout the month, students will learn more about empathy and practice this trait. Teachers will be looking for students to earn Golden Compliments or to be recognized for the Character Trait of the Month Award when demonstrating that trait. We look forward to a great month building strong connections with others.

Second Step: Lesson 5
This week in Second Step: Lesson 5 will be delivered on Friday, October 14.
- Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
You’ll receive weekly communications from me to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information. Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community!
During this unit your child(ren) will be working on: Click the Grade Level Below!
This week, chat with your child(ren) about:
- Grade 2: Learn and Get Better: In this week’s lesson, your child will use what they’ve learned from the unit to give advice to someone who is struggling to learn something new. Try This at Home: Ask your child what advice they would give you if you were having a hard time learning something new.
- Grade 3: Make a Practice Plan: In this week’s lesson, your child will make their own practice plan. Try This at Home: Ask your child share their practice plan with you. If they brought it home, find a place to display it where they’ll see it every day. Check in to see how their plan is going, and support them if they need help adjusting their plans.
- Grade 4: Ready, Set, Goal!: In this week’s lesson, your child will practice the full goal-setting process as they work toward a 10-minute goal with a group. Try This at Home: Work with your child to make a list of 1-week goals you could set as a family. Choose one and make sure it’s specific, challenging, and doable. Follow the goal-setting process to make a plan, check in on how it’s going, and at the end of the week, reflect on how it went and what you could do next time.
- Grade 5: My 10-Minute Goal: In this week’s lesson, your child will apply the full goal-setting process they learned in this unit to work toward a 10-minute goal of their choice. Try This at Home: Ask your child about the goal-setting process they learned in this unit and why it’s important. Encourage them to set a new short-term goal that's right for them and to follow the process they learned. Check in along the way to see how it’s going.
