Mrs. Tuttle's CAP Class ~ Shields Elementary

MAY 19, 2016

Mission Statement

We, the SHIELDS CAPtains, will participate in advanced learning, continuously grow, and move on to the next grade level, by being responsible, doing our best, working together, and learning from our mistakes.

What's Happening??

  • 5/23 - Spring Band Concert

  • 5/25 - Freeman Stage Field Trip

  • 5/27 & 5/30 - MEMORIAL WEEKEND ~ NO SCHOOL

  • 6/1 - Field Day for 4th and 5th graders

Perseverance? They got it!

I just want to take a minute to say how impressed I was with ALL the students performance as they completed their state tests. Each day they would come in with a "get it done" attitude, determined to do their best and show off how much they know. They stuck with it and I cannot wait to see the results! They all received 5++++ in my eyes!!!

Progress Reports

Last marking period progress reports are coming home tomorrow! Please review them and let me know if you have any questions. Remember you can always review work and grades on Schoology as well. Keep in mind though that not all assignments graded in Schoology will appear on the progress report or report card and likewise some assignments on the report card will not be in Schoology.

#RELAX Homework

Next week will be the last week for a homework choice board and it will be due on the 31st. It will be another #RELAX board with some new choices! We will not have any homework in June.

On Fridays, we've been having some fun with STEM projects. The first day we completed the Marshmallow Challenge and then last week we had a competition to see what team could build the highest tower of 48 Dixie cups. It has been exciting to watch the teams problem solve and work together to be successful. Tomorrow's challenge involves a deck of cards!

My Side of the Mountain

We have been reading My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George and it seems to be a hit with all. Even the substitute that was in this week said she enjoyed the book!

We are continuing our vocabulary and comprehension studies with the text and also participating in discussions and creating projects. Check out what your child has been creating on Schoology. This weeks projects included creating a meal plan that Sam could use to maintain a healthy diet while living in the wilderness and completing a mini research project on the Peregrine Falcon.

Math Mention

We still have two units to hopefully wrap up by the end of the year. We are in the midst of our Algebra unit and then will get into some geometry to wrap up the year.

We have had some great conversations about math patterns and how we can use algebraic equations to show and solve the pattern. It's always amazing to hear the diverse strategies that the students are using. I learn something new during each discussion!
