Self Care - An Article Shared by Kevin Parkinson of Midtown Public Charter School
Have you ever noticed that October can be a very difficult month for teachers? It’s not just an intuition you have; there are actual studies behind it! The image below is an adaptation from researcher Ellen Moir, and it demonstrates the feelings many teachers experience as they progress through a typical academic year. Plus with increasingly shortened days and changing weather, we’ve got biology, astronomy, and climate change working against us as we proceed into the scary month of October. The good news is that there are things that we can do.
1. It starts with awareness. I share this research with you not to intimidate or scare you, but instead to help reiterate the idea that if you have moments of frustration or depression this month, that - more than ever - is normal. I know you don’t need my permission to feel any kind of way - but I want to remind you that feelings are a natural part of the human experience, and confronting them is far better than trying to deny them. Some believe that we shouldn’t make teachers aware of this research because it might cause you to feel bad, even if you otherwise wouldn’t. I think that’s bologna. Rather, it is my hope that if you find yourself feeling down this month, you’ll remember this research and maybe give yourself a little bit of much-deserved grace.
2. Of course, self care is also crucial. While everyone’s bodies and minds are different, I personally follow the SWEET method of self care. Getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, making sure you are eating healthy and avoiding sugar as much as possible, exercising and staying active, and spending sufficient time with the people you love - all of it is so crucial. And as a bonus, good ol’ fashioned mindfulness doesn’t hurt either.
3. And finally, beyond self care is community care. Take time to show up for one another. If you notice a colleague is down, check in with them. Offer to help, if it’s appropriate, or maybe look for ways to share happiness and encourage each other whenever possible. If you’ve got a grudge with someone, muster all your courage, bravery, and love, and see if you can resolve it. Or, let it go. Sometimes forgiveness can be the greatest gift of all.
October is often a difficult month for teachers. But if we all work together, I know we can make it more than just tolerable - but instead fantastic. Let’s continue the awe-inspiring work you are doing with kids each and every day, and be sure to check in with yourself and others.
