A Word from Mr. Jerrell
Dear Bain families,
I hope everyone has a long and restful holiday break. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Thursday, January 3rd.
Over the break, I want to challenge all of our families to have at least 7 days where the entire family drops everything they are doing and reads for 20 - 30 minutes. It is a great family activity and can support great reading habits during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
You can also play some great math games at home with your students over the break. One of the games I enjoy playing with my 1st grade son is called “4 card”. In this game, I flip over 4 cards and we use arithmetic to make as many numbers as possible using at least 2 cards. For example, if we flipped over a 5, 6, 3, and 9, we could say “6 - 5 = 1, 5 - 3 = 2, 6 - 3 = 3, 9 - 5 = 4. Students can be creative to form more challenging numbers. For example, 9 + 6 - 5 + 3 = 13. This game can also be modified for your older students by drawing 5 cards and picking a random number under 100. For example, for 5, 6, 3, 9, and 4, and a random target number of 76, students could say “9 + 3 = 12, 12 x 6 = 72, 72 + 4 = 76” or “5 + 3 = 8, 8 x 9 = 72, 72 + 4 = 76”. These games can improve fluency and encourage strategic and flexible thinking.
When we return, Mr. Cannon and I will be hosting assemblies to remind our students of our baseline character expectations. At Bain, we encourage all students to be kind, respectful, and responsible. Our students already do a great job of all of those things, but a little reminder never hurts.
Thank you for all that you do in supporting our school and our educational vision. As always, we want to partner with you in any way we can. If you have any feedback for us, please feel free to reach out at any time.

If a student does not pass the hearing screening after two attempts, a "Consent for Hearing Evaluation" permission form will be sent to the parent. Please return this form to the Speech-Language Pathologist by the required date.
Parents of students being monitored for history of hearing loss should be aware that they will also receive a consent form. Without signed permission, students WILL NOT receive a hearing evaluation by the school's Audiologist.

Bain Elementary Reading Program 20/20
Reading can be rewarding and we would love to make it a daily habit. Therefore, each month the library will make a reading log available for you and your child to fill out. At the end of the month, submit or return the reading log to your student’s homeroom teacher. Every child earns one raffle ticket for every month they turn in a log. Students will get the opportunity put the raffle tickets in to win extra prizes at the reading celebration at the end of the year. Students that turn in a reading log for every month during the program (January through May) will be entered to win an e-reader and/or a gift card.
Students in K-5 will be challenged to turn in one reading bookmark a month between the months of January 1st and April 30th. Each child will read at their own pace and record every day they read at least 20 minutes outside of the school day.
Students can be read to, they can listen to audio books, read books on their own, read magazines, graphic novels, read anything with words and even wordless books. The 20 minutes does not have to be read at one time. Students can break it up and read 5 minutes before school, 5 minutes after school etc… as long as it equals 20 minutes total for the day.
Fill out the monthly bookmark reading log and return it at the end of the month.
Important Information:
Paper reading logs will be distributed in Tuesday folders at the start of each month and as needed. You can also find a copy of the reading logs here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AX5lJyVGfskdQCJZDqr3x6N9DzaSMi8b/view?usp=sharing
Color or mark out each day your child reads 20 minutes or more outside of the school day on the bookmark log.
If your child has read for at least 20 minutes for at least 20 days and recorded them on his/her reading log, return the log to the Media Center at the end of that month for a reward on their next library day visit. Make sure your student’s name is on the log and a parent signature.
Turn in days will be on the first Friday of every month.
It is that easy! This is an optional program for your child to encourage a love for reading. At the end of the school year we will celebrate with a reading celebration and give out awards.
Have fun reading!
