HPE Patriot Post
Harrison Parkway Elementary
Thank you
Thank you for sharing your wonderful kids with us this year! As a school community, we have had an exciting year of wondering, questioning, investigating, and learning. We have built friendships and improved our social relationships. We have grown as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists and investigators. As teachers we have learned so much from our students and feel extremely fortunate to have spent this year with them. We wish you a safe and fun summer break and look forward to seeing many of our Patriots back in August!

Dressing for School
As the weather gets warmer, please be reminded of the dress expectation as indicated in the HSE Elementary School Handbook:
DRESSING FOR SCHOOL
Student clothing and appearance should not draw undue attention from other students or faculty or disrupt the normal routine. If there is doubt about the appropriateness of a garment, it should not be worn. Attire typically worn at the beach, in the garden, yard, or lounging at home is not appropriate for school. Clothing and accessories that advertise, promote, or glorify the use of alcohol, tobacco, or an illegal substance is inappropriate. Any clothing item that can be interpreted as having gang symbols may not be worn. Hats, caps and bandanas are not to be worn during the school day in the building. Bare midriff, backless halters, spaghetti strap tops, tank tops, and mesh shirts are not to be worn. Attire that may damage school property (such as chains) or pose a danger to the safety of students and staff members (such as “Heelies”) shall not be worn. Shoes shall be worn at all times.
iPad Collections
The following information only applies to students and families who rented an iPad from HSE this year. We ask these families to carefully review the following information.
WHEN AND WHERE WILL RENTAL IPADS BE COLLECTED?
iPads will be collected prior to the end of the school year; your school will communicate their specific collection dates. Stay tuned to school newsletters and Skylerts.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE THE IPAD FOR RETURN?
We ask that families follow the directions in the link below to prepare the iPad for return. It is important that families follow all steps in the link. It is important that families DO NOT erase/reset the iPad on their own. HSE must verify that the iPad has been signed out of their Apple ID before the iPad is reset. Any apps that have been downloaded under the student’s or family’s iTunes account will remain yours in the cloud and can be downloaded again onto another device if the same iTunes account is used. Please note, if during the collection process we find that your student’s iPad is not signed out of iCloud, you will be contacted by the school asking for your iCloud password.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE RETURNED?
All students will return their rented HSE iPad and cases.
WHAT ABOUT CHARGING BRICKS AND CORDS?
Rented cords and bricks will not be collected. If you are a new renter, you are welcome to keep the rented cord and brick that were issued to you. Repeat renters for 2018-19 and beyond will not receive a new cord and brick. You may use the one initially provided to you or you may provide your own.
WHAT IF THE IPAD IS DAMAGED? WHAT ARE THE FEES?
Upon collection, the iPad and case will be checked for any obvious visible damages. A more thorough inspection will later assess the working condition of the iPad and case. Any damage to the iPad and/or case will result in fees being assessed to the student’s account. Following inspection, the iPad will be erased of all content and stored for the summer.
Sample fees that could be applied to the student’s account:
- Missing iPad case (or damaged where it cannot be reissued) - $49.95
- Cracked or severely scratch screen - $79
- Other damage (i.e., broken headphone jack or loose video cable) - $79
- Liquid damage to the iPad or other damage to the iPad beyond repair - $299
- Lost, missing, or unreturned iPad - $299
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS ABSENT DURING COLLECTION AND DOES NOT TURN IN THEIR DEVICE?
If your child is absent during collection and it is after May 25th, you may return your device and case to the Administration Building, 13485 Cumberland Rd., Monday-Friday between 7:30am and 3:30pm.
We appreciate your assistance with the return of this equipment.

Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, you still need to contact the office (by phone or email) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.

Lost & Found
Note from the Nurse
Accidents happen during the day such as bloody noses, toileting issues, muddy puddles at recess, food/milk spilling at lunch, etc.... The clinic has a limited supply of clothes, so please pack an extra change of clothes (socks and underwear too!) in your child's backpack for the unexpected mishaps. If I do not have anything that fits your child, you will be receiving a call for a change of clothes to be brought to school, since your child cannot return to class or ride the bus home with soiled or wet clothes. Thank you for your support!
Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 2:00 pm. This is to allow enough time to accurately deliver messages to teachers, as well as time to confirm the change if necessary. Please do not call the school after 2:00 pm to make a transportation change except in the case of extreme emergencies.
Volunteering and the Background Check Process
Parents/visitors to HPE must have a background check on file with the school (including watching the anti-bullying video and completing the video survey) in order to volunteer in the school or to have lunch with a student. The link for the background check information can be found on link below at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx
The background checks are conducted by a 3rd party company, and there is a $13.00 fee for processing (payable online at the time of the application). Once completed, approved background checks are valid for a period of 3 years. Applicants will be notified via email when their background check has been completed and they will also notify people 30 days before their background check expires.
Safe Visitor Badges
Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the Safe Visitor App (IPhone) or have your badge ready and available to be scanned when you come into the school office. The app is in Google Play for other types of phones. To find the Safe Visitor app, search for “SafeVisitor” (there is no space in between the words).
Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Vicki Foutty at 317-594-4100.

HSE Preschool
Registration is open for the HSE Preschool!
Are you looking for a preschool program for your 3- to 5-year-old? HSE offers half-day preschool classes at Brooks School Elementary, Hoosier Road Elementary, Sand Creek Elementary and Sand Creek Intermediate.
Each class is taught by a licensed teacher, and an instructional assistant also aids the children. Class sizes remain small with no more than 18 students in a room. The times are 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 12:30-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Some families prefer the five-day option. The tuition cost is $300 per month. Others prefer fewer days per week. Families may also select two days per week (Tuesdays, Thursdays) for $120 per month or three days per week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) for $180 per month. There is also a yearly $90 supply fee.
To learn more about the Preschool, visit: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/academics/preschool.aspx

Community Bulletin Board
On February 1, 2017, HSE Schools launched the HSE Schools Community Bulletin Board. The CBB is the new home for school-corporation approved flyers from community organizations. The CBB can be found on the HSE Schools district web site below the scrolling slide show. It is below the Need Help/Emergency Concerns section. As a result of the addition of CBB, community announcements will no longer be featured in our newsletter. Instead, those items will be posted on the Community Bulletin Board. Each week an updated link will be provided here in the newsletter to access the bulletin board so parents can view upcoming community events.
