Faculty F.Y.I.
August 7, 2019
Thank you to all the teachers who have assisted in planning and preparing our Pre-K, K, and Middle School Orientations! Know that your efforts will put many nervous students at ease as they begin a new year here. I look forward to sharing this day with all of you.
I would encourage you to take a look at the Opposing Views section below. There are two brief articles attached that consider the practice of posting learning objectives in the classroom. One article is strongly for the practice, the other opposes it. I would like to have a brief conversation regarding this practice at our in-service on August 27th. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
A reminder that classrooms officially open on Monday, August 12th, which is Victory Day in Rhode Island. I will be in the office beginning at 8:00am to ensure you have access to your classroom. If you plan on arriving after 3:30pm, please let me know so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Kevin Peloquin

Opposing Views: Posting Learning Objectives in Your Classroom
I am sure many of you have heard the famous saying that two things are certain in life - death and taxes. I think we could safely add to that list disagreements by educators over the effectiveness of any and all pedagogical practices.
With this in mind, I wanted to present two articles for you regarding the practice of posting objectives at the start of each lesson. One article is strongly in favor, the other, opposed; however, it is worth noting that the two articles do share some similar conclusions. Both are written by authors with extensive classroom experience who are well-respected in their fields. They are attached below.
I would encourage you to read both articles and think about the ways posting or not posting objectives would affect student learning in your classroom. I would like to briefly continue this conversation at our in-service day on August 27th. Don't worry about printing out the articles or having them read by then, these are just meant to get the conversation started.
Looking forward to our conversation!
Summer Spotlight Series
One way in which I'd like to accomplish this is through a "Summer Spotlight Series" on our Facebook page. Please note that this is entirely optional!
What does this entail?
If you're interested in taking part, simply fill out the Summer Spotlight Survey here (you'll need to be logged in to your school Google account):
I'll use the information in the survey to create a post that details your great work at FJVD and a little more about you! The post will be shared through our school Facebook page.
Spotlight Posts will be created as survey responses come in and will run approximately every week, as participation allows. Don't worry if your post does not make it over the summer, we will continue the posts as needed to make sure everyone has an opportunity!
I look forward to learning more about you and sharing some of your great work with our community!
Facilities Update
Summer Email
I absolutely encourage and support using the summer months for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. With that being said, it would be helpful if you can briefly check your emails once every 1-2 weeks, simply to stay up to date with any announcements, change in dates, etc.
Thank you!
