UTC Oxfordshire
Newsletter - 9th July 2021
Dear all
Today marks the penultimate Friday of term and we still have lots to achieve and celebrate. Assessments are being returned to students and focus falls to recognising the knowledge gaps and how we can improve our exam technique. We have some great mentoring available from our sixth form students and excellent support through subject teachers. The sun is set to shine this weekend and I can't not mention the sporting activities going on. Wimbledon finals, GAA Championships, Lions Rugby Tour and of course Euro final.
If sport isn't your thing then tomorrow is: GLOBAL ENERGY INDEPENDENCE DAY
Every year on July 10th, Global Energy Independence Day promotes awareness for alternative forms of energy. The day also offers opportunities to learn more about renewable forms of energy, such as solar, wind, and geothermal.
Think about all the things you use on a daily basis that require energy. Our cars. Your coffee maker. Our homes’ heating and cooling system. Your wood-burning stove. So many things require energy. It’s no wonder that each human being in the world uses about 78 million British thermal units (BTU) of energy a year. This means the entire population of the world uses over 575 quadrillion Btu of energy each year! (One BTU equals the energy released in a single match.)
Some of the most common sources of energy that people use include oil, coal, and gas. These types of energy are known as fossil fuels. There are many concerns with fossil fuels. One is that they will eventually run out. Other fossil fuel concerns include air and water pollution, land degradation, and global warming. These problems are motivating scientists to discover newer forms of energy that can be replenished. These types of energy include solar, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear, and geothermal.
Some believe that the only way to achieve energy independence is to embrace renewable energy. Unfortunately, this is difficult to do. Some reasons for this include a lack of knowledge about how these energy sources work and also how much they cost for the consumer. One more major barrier in switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy is the inconvenience of doing so. This is why awareness for renewable energy is so important.
HOW TO OBSERVE #GlobalEnergyIndependenceDay
On this day, companies that produce renewable energy host workshops, conferences, and educational seminars. They disseminate information on energy independence to the general public. People around the world also celebrate the famous engineer, physicist, and futurist Nikola Tesla.
To participate:
- Think about ways to embrace renewable energy.
- Watch a movie that features Nikola Tesla, such as “Tesla,” “American Genius,” “The Tesla Files,” “Tesla: Master of Lightning,” or “Pictures of Infinity.”
- Learn more about fossil fuels and why they reduce energy independence.

Race for life
Year 12 Business students are helping to organise the annual UTC Oxfordshire Race for Life charity run for students on Tuesday 20th July 2021. This event is a great opportunity for everyone to have fun and run, walk or sprint round our 5K course to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Students are encouraged to come in fancy dress or in tutor group/team colours. There will be prizes!
All students are strongly encouraged to participate on the day, and we ask that a minimum £2.00 donation is made on the Just Giving link below to secure a place. We know that many of you will be able to give more for this excellent cause but have reduced the minimum entry this year so that everyone can take part.
Please follow this link to secure entry and state your student’s name on your donation message so that we know who has entered.
We will be holding a fun raffle for students and staff on the day. If you have any unwanted items suitable for students that they are willing to donate to our raffle prize table, please drop these off at Reception.
We are excited about holding our first all school event of the year.
Thank you for your support!

Covid Update
As you have probably heard in the news there is likely to be a requirement for students to be tested on their return to school in September. Finer details of this will be communicated on 1st September. In the meantime, students will be issued with home testing Lateral flow kits which should be continued to be used twice a week over the summer. Please continue to record the results on both the government website and the school form:
