CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Dec 9-Dec 13, 2019
Hello First Program Community,
Term 2 has come to an end and Term 3 begins on January 13th. Faculty and students have now begun their winter holidays.
We had a wonderful final week of school. We wrapped up the week with our Candle Lighting Ceremony. This is a unique opportunity throughout the year for all three divisions to come together for an event: First Program, Middle School, and High School. Dr. Park addresses the school; we have musical performances by all three divisions, and students from each division are recognized for growth and achievement in the ESLRs.
The Candle Lighting Ceremony is also an opportunity for the CDS community to pause and reflect on how each of us, through our mindset and actions, can add a little bit of light and positivity to the world, especially now during winter when the nights are long and the days short.
We have three student MCs to host the event, and Dohoon from fourth grade was an exceptional representative of FP.
There are readers and lighters for the special event, and FP selects one student from each grade for each of two roles. The following students proudly represented the First Program.

Looking ahead, we have four new students who will be joining the First Program in Term 3:

We look forward to welcoming them and their families into the CDS FP community.

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring G2, P.E., and the Winter Concert (Music and Drama)
G2 with Ms. Mahomed
In term 2 social studies, second graders have learned all about government and civic and personal responsibilities. An important civic responsibility is voting, so second grade classes had their own class elections. Students created posters and ran for president, secretary or treasurer. Students cast their ballots secretly at the classroom voting booth and got stickers that say ‘I voted’ after voting! We had so much fun with this activity! Congrats to Junseong, our new president, Gia, our new secretary, and Chris, our new treasurer. Great job second grade! Thank you to all our candidates for running and showing what they know about government!
P.E. with Mr. Tronsgard
In PE, the students have spent the past few weeks focussing on health and safety. The Grade 1 students learned about healthy eating and what your body can do when it has had a healthy meal. The grade 2 students learned about creating a healthy and balanced lunch, and how it can help us develop. The Grade 3 students studied fire safety and outdoor safety and they wrapped up their unit by making a safety in sports video. The Grade 4 students covered bullying and safety, as they finished the unit by acting out scenarios to help teach others about using the internet safely.
Winter Concert (Music) with Mr. Fejes
The concert happened and it went well! Thank you to the PTA for your generous contributions, thank you to the FP teachers for your help in leading the students around and thank you to the students for giving your best performance.
Winter Concert (Drama) with Ms. Stant
The 2nd and 3rd Grade Drama students thrilled the audience with their entertaining renditions of “The Gingerbread Girl” (Grade 2) and “A Brief Christmas Carol” (Grade 3) this past week at the FP Winter Concert.
As the first play of the year for the 2nd grade students, they excelled at showcasing their memorization and characterization skills onstage. The students kept the audience engaged and laughing throughout the entirety of their play. Great job Grade 2!
The 3rd grade students were not strangers to the stage this term as they were performing in their 2nd play of the year. The students learned how to play realistic and fantastical characters in an adaption of the classic tale, “A Christmas Carol.” The audience was entertained as the actors took them one a one-night journey with Ebenezer Scrooge.
Term 3 is another exciting part of the year for the FP students as we will continue building plays together for Grade 2 and the 1st Grade students will be welcomed into the Drama Studio.
House
Reduce - Reuse - Recycle
This week in House, FP students were asked important questions such as what is recycling, why do we recycle, and what can we recycle. After a mini lesson, students took a trip around the school to generate ideas on what the CDS community can do to save the Earth.
