Ohio Science Explorers
5th Grade Science Institute
State Standards:
This year the 5th grade science assessment will be fully aligned to Ohio’s revised 2018 Science Standards. The challenge for many districts is finding curriculum and resources that align with Ohio’s science standards. Dave Shellhaas, science specialist at the Midwest Regional ESC, is developing a 5th grade science curriculum directly aligned to Ohio’s Science Learning Standards.
The Ohio Science Explorers Grade 5 curriculum is a complete curriculum which is developed around the 5E’s and a sound learning progressions. The curriculum materials are engaging and centered around exploration of concepts. The lessons and activities help students develop conceptual understanding of the many concepts and topics in Ohio’s 5th grade standards. The curriculum also integrates ELA standards to reinforce the reading and writing standards.
Training for Teachers:
It is important that teachers understand how to implement the curriculum and understand the concepts taught throughout the curriculum. This institute will provide teachers with not only the entire curriculum, but also the background and important insights in how the curriculum is to be taught. Teachers will also learn about the concepts to gain a solid content knowledge for all of the units in the curriculum.
The training will consist of:
3 full-day sessions where teachers will engage in the four units of the Ohio Science Explorers Grade 5 curriculum, which addresses Ohio’s Earth, Life and Physical science standards.
A virtual Professional Learning Community where participants can share insights, questions and challenges they encounter between the face-to-face sessions.
All 4 units of the Grade 5 curriculum with all the complete lesson and instructional materials.
Training Sessions:
Session 1 - Unit 1: Exploring Our Sun and Solar System (Earth Science standards)
Session 2 - Unit 2: Exploring Relationships Within Ecosystems (Life Science standards)
Session 3 - Units 3 & 4: Exploring Motion and Forces and Exploring Light and Sound (Physical Science standards)
