Wheeler Flash
December 2015
Message From the Principal
Dear Wheeler Families,
Happy New Year, 2016! The month of December was filled with excitement at Wheeler School having another beautiful Winter Fest hosted by the PTO and all of the wonderful learning and celebrations happening in classrooms. I hope all students and families enjoyed their time off during winter break and feel healthy and energized as we begin the second half of the school year.
Occasionally throughout the year, I have reminded parents to make sure your child leaves the house in the morning dressed appropriately for the cold weather. We strive to get the students outside as much as possible. We use NBC Connecticut weather to monitor the temperature during our recess/wellness times. We use a guideline of “feels like 20 degrees” or above for going outside. If the temperature is below “feels like 20 degrees”, we will keep the students inside.
With that said, we continue to have some children arrive to school without hats, gloves or mittens and sometimes coats. I understand individual families may have unfortunate circumstances at the current time preventing them from accessing cold weather gear. If this is the case, please email or call me and I will work with you to get this gear. We want to make sure ALL of our students have the opportunity to safely and comfortably play outside during recess.
Lastly, as we begin a new year, I want to congratulate the students, teachers and parents for their collective efforts toward achieving our school goal in the area of reading. Students are setting individual goals, achieving them and developing new goals! 5th grade students have been sharing their individual goals on the morning announcements on Wednesdays. Parents, a good way to model the importance of reading at home is to read a book of your choice along side your child while they are reading a book of their choice. After reading together, briefly sharing together about what you have read over your favorite snack usually works out well for all for all involved! :)
Wishing all families a happy and healthy 2016!
Thanks
