Stellar Second Graders

March Birthdays:

Happy birthday to our March birthdays!

Eleanor, Kylie N. and Tate

Ipads & Headphones

  • Please ensure that all iPads are changed to 100% daily. This is very important! It ensures your child is fully prepared for all classroom activities. We have been emphasizing how your child should talk to you to establish a charging routine, as it is their responsibility to charge. Where will the iPad be charged? When will I put it on the iPad? Please review with your child.
  • Also, your child needs a pair of headphones/earbuds at school. Either one is fine. We don't have a preference.
  • The primary use for the headphones at school is for the iPad. Some headphones do not sync up with the iPads. (We wish we knew more about why this happens, but we don't. There isn't a brand or particular kind that we see not "communicating." It is slightly random. If you know more, please share with us. We pride ourselves in trying to stay tech savy, but this one is just a mystery to us.) If your child tells you, "my headphones don't work," please test it out on their iPad. Sometimes, headphones can work on an iPhone or laptop, but not on their iPad. (Trust me: It has happened to both our daughters!) Please replace any headphones that are not compatible with the iPad. Feel free to use them at home with other devices.
  • Do you have broken headphones? Don't throw them. You can reuse them in many ways. If the cord is broken, cut it off. You will have a brand new pair of noise cancelling headphones! Your child can use these to mow the lawn or read a book without distraction.

Math Workshop:

In math workshop we are currently working on strategies for adding and subtracting numbers up to 1000. Students are learning to use strategies such as an open number line, base ten blocks, expanded form, partial sums and friendly numbers. The expectation for second grade is that they can use multiple strategies to solve a problem.

Language Workshop:

We have wrapped up our unit on investigation. We are now starting Unit 6: Growth. The question we will be focusing on is, "What causes growth?" We will also be exploring how characters grow and change throughout a story, and how we grow as readers. We will be investigating these questions through two series of books including characters Betty Bunny and a dog named Marley.

Writing Workshop:

Our students have been working hard on their buddy biographies. Students interviewed each other and recorded information about their partner. Then they wrote rough drafts, revised and edited their work and are now in the process of writing their final drafts. With the help of Mrs. Crocker, students have been drawing a picture of each others' faces in art class. They look amazing! We can't wait to show you our final projects next week at our Showcase of Learning!

Science:

We have been busy exploring how and why changes on the earth occur. We learned about landforms and how they change over time. Students did an excellent job making salt dough models to represent their understanding of various landforms. Thank you for you support with the salt dough for that project! Students explored slow changes to the earth by weathering, erosion and deposition. We also learned about changes to the earth that happen quickly including tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis, landslides, volcanoes and earthquakes. We will now be taking a closer look at erosion and how it can be prevented.

Showcase of Excellence:

Our Second Grade Showcase of Excellence will be next Wednesday, March 13th at 6:00pm. Students will be showing off all of the amazing work they've done so far this year. The Showcase will be followed by our 2nd grade concert at 6:30pm in the gym. See you there!
