Kindergarten Class News
October 8-12, 2018
Thanks to the Hendricks Fire Department for visiting the school to teach us about fire safety!
Language Arts
The Kindergarten students have continued to practice recognizing sight words, blending the sounds of CVC words together to decode the word, and recognizing/reading patterns in leveled texts during our Language Arts time each morning. We have also enjoyed activities where we identify the first sound in three different words, two of which are the same and one is different, and then identify which word doesn't belong in the set. Each of them amaze me every single day with how much they have learned in the time we have been in school!
At home, please be reading the little paper books that are sent home each week. They contain the sight words we are working on and it is a great and easy way to keep your student practicing them. Also, go through lower case letters occasionally at home as well, particularly lower case b and d. Most of the class is having a hard time differentiating between the two letters (which is very common in Kindergarten!).
Math
We have covered a few different topics in math lately! The kids learned how to identify a shape as 2D or 3D, names of 3D shapes, how to identify/count sides and corners of triangles, rectangles, squares, and circles (which, of course, do not have sides or corners at all). They enjoyed using pattern blocks to create different shapes by putting various ones together as well. Ms. Robillard, our SMSU Education Student, completed her 15 hours of math instruction/observation and kick-started our patterning unit which will be coming up next week.
Science
The students completed their unit assessment on living and nonliving things this week. We will begin a Social Studies unit called Everybody Works. During this unit, we will discuss the difference between needs and wants, goods and services, and using money to buy and sell things.
