Geography
The midwest region is located west of the great lakes and south of canada. This area includes North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. Major landforms include the Ozarks in Missouri, the barren eroded Badlands of South Dakota, the Great Lakes, and the Great Plains. In the Midwest winters can be very cold and summers are usually long and hot. Most places get up to 20 inches or precipitation annually.
History
The first settlers in this area were Europeans, Germans, Swedes and Norwegians, and Native Americans. In 1803 the United States paid France 15 million dollars, this was called the Louisiana Purchase. With this purchase we gained all of the midwestern states.
Economics
Natural resources for this area include humus, corn, soybeans, wheat, and oats. Farming in this area helped create grain elevators to make storing grsin easier. Steel making was also a large business in the Midwest. The grain exchange brought people from all over to the midwest to purchase grain.
What to do in the midwest
Galena, Illinois is the home to the Belvedere Mansion. This home was built in 1857 for J. Russell Jones, Ambassador to Belgium. Located in Indianapolis, Indiana is the very first union station. They are best known for our 26 authentic Pullman train car rooms still resting on their original tracks. In Duluth, Minnesota is the Union Depot. This is a St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center, Indoor Train Museum, and Children's Museum &Art Galleries. The Midwest is also filled with 33 professional sports teams.
Population/Culture
A 2012 report from the United States Census put the population of the Midwest at 65,377,684. Immigrants come from all around to get jobs in the Midwest. The high immigration rates balance out the leaving of the native born workers. Most people in the Midwest come from a German ancestry.
