Sheldon ISD Tech Tips

September 2017

Welcome Back!

After a very difficult time for our Sheldon ISD community, I am so happy to see all of our students back in school! Everywhere I have been, students have been so happy to be back in school with YOU!

Numerous students and parents have shared with me how their schools and teachers stayed in touch with them and helped them with various apps during Harvey. So, KUDOS to all of you for using the tools at your disposal to help students and colleagues to safety and to stay in touch with students and families. #Sheldonstrong

Tech Repair

We know there were many student devices lost in the flooding. Our tech department is working diligently to get everything up and running for staff and students. Please be patient as everyone works to get things replaced, up, and running.

In the meantime, if you have student devices assigned to you that need attention, please continue to put all repair needs in Eduphoria.

Elementary and Secondary Teachers

Each item below is either an update or a new tool appropriate for all grade levels.

Catch the Flipgrid Fever!

If you enjoy using technology in your classroom and you haven't heard about Flipgrid, please check it out! Flipgrid is a fairly new iOS app or website (www.flipgrid.com) that has taken the education market by storm - where teachers can create a grid (which is like a classroom). In the grid, you create a topic in the form of a question. Students then use the topic code to access it and add a short video response. You can choose whether students can respond to each other and you can moderate posts before they are visible to others. Flipgrid is an excellent option for #studentvoice and allows you to hear directly from every student.

With the free version you get one grid with unlimited topics. In the paid version, you get unlimited grids and topics.

Ways to Use Flipgrid:

  • Book reviews
  • Video discussion boards
  • Reading reflections
  • Project reflections
  • Documented brainstorming
  • Appreciation or thank you gesture
  • Advice for next year's students
  • Staff introductions to parents
  • Staff introductions to students

Check out #flipgridfever on Twitter for more great ideas from other educators.

Quizlet Diagrams - New!

One of our teacher favorites - Quizlet - now lets you upload an image to practice vocabulary and labeling with diagrams. Just upload an image and use the tools to annotate the parts you would like students to label. Then, students can practice and study in a variety of ways. See the video and the sample study set on seed germination below.

Diagrams could even begin to work in the Quizlet LIVE format soon!
