UMHS Key Club Blood Drive - Friday, May 4

Union Mine Key Club is hosting their annual spring blood drive on May 4th.

We’d like to encourage all students 16 or over to sign up and donate.

WHY DONATE? Because every pint of blood saves 3 lives!

o Everyday people like you need blood (students, teachers, family, friends)

o The only source is generous volunteers like you!

o High school students donate 18,000 lifesaving pints of blood each year through the Blood Source! (our donation organization)

· Our goal is 50 pints this year and we need your help!

REQUIREMENTS TO DONATE:

  • Signed parent consent form (all ages, even if you’re 18)
  • A picture ID
  • 16 years old by May 4th
  • At least 115 pounds and in good health
  • No signs of sickness for 2 days prior (cold, flu, etc)
  • The night before: Eat a meal high in sodium (soup, pizza, salty food)
  • Salty food makes you thirsty so you drink more water/stay hydrated
  • The day of:
  • Eat a healthy meal
  • Drink 16 oz of water or juice (soda, coffee & tea don’t count!!)

If you want to sign up there will be Key Club members will outside of Mrs. Smith’s room (C207) during lunch this week and next week, Tuesday-Thursday.

THE PROCESS:

  1. Stop by and pick up a consent form
  2. Take it home and have a parent sign it
  3. Return it to a Key Club member in front of C207 and choose a time to donate on Friday, May 4th!

COMMON QUESTIONS:

  • How much do I give? 1 pint
  • Is it safe? Yes! All materials are only used once. You cannot get a disease by donating. Most people feel fine after they donate. The actual needle hurts no more than a pinch.
  • How long does it take? 60-70 minutes
  • Are there side effects? Complications are rare! Sometimes: nausea, dizziness, fainting may occur, but not often! You may feel fatigue: if you are on a sports team, do not practice or play that day. Please clear this with your coach ahead of time!
