Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!
We are excited to have the Scholastic Spring Book Fair at CFKN on
Monday, March 13 - Wednesday, March 15.
Shopping Schedule:
Monday: Tuesday library students (Wegren, Fain, Brazell, Wood, Frederick, Eudy) will shop during their scheduled library time.
Tuesday: Monday library students (Quadri, Salter, Foltz, Tilley, Thomas, Friedman) will shop during their scheduled library time
Wednesday: Students will shop during the time their teacher signs up to bring his/her class.
Important Book Fair Information:
eWallet is convenient and may be your family’s best option for this particular book fair due to parking concerns.
You can get your eWallet or shop on-line with Scholastic.
This book fair is also a fundraiser for our school’s library and teacher classrooms. All purchases will participate in the “All for Books” program which will fund books for teachers’ classrooms. This means that we will round all purchases up to the next dollar. Example: A purchase of $10.12 will be $11.00 and a purchase of $10.78 will be $11.00. Because of this, teachers will not make wish lists - all teachers will get to shop the bookfair with profits from the All for Books fundraiser.
We look forward to an amazing book fair and truly appreciate your participation!

Welcome to the month of March!
Welcome to the month of March! We are quickly approaching the end of the school year as the 23rd of this month is the end of Quarter 3 and will begin the last quarter, Quarter 4, which signals that only 9 weeks remain of the school year. As we close down this school year, ensuring that all students are equipped with the skills to problem solve and self-advocate for themselves is essential as many of them will be joining different summer activities that will require these skills. This month’s Classroom Counseling lessons will center on problem-solving strategies for K-2nd grades and Self-Advocacy for grades 3rd- 5th. Students will learn how to face problems and challenges on a daily basis. We can’t always be there to solve every problem for children. In fact, this isn’t our job. Our job is to TEACH children how to solve problems by themselves. This way, they can become confident, independent, and successful individuals. Instead of giving up or getting frustrated when they encounter a challenge, kids with problem-solving skills manage their emotions, think creatively, and persist until they find a solution. Naturally, these abilities go hand-in-hand with a growth mindset. The same goes for self-advocacy. Self-Advocacy is learning how to speak up for yourself, becoming comfortable with making your own decisions about your life, learning how to get information so that you can understand things that are of interest to you, finding out who will support you in your journey, knowing your rights and responsibilities, problem solving, listening and learning, reaching out to others when you need help and friendship, and learning about self-determination. Self-Advocacy is important so that they have the knowledge needed to succeed and are given the chance to participate in decisions that are being made about their life. Please see the information below that gives ways to teach problem solving skills by age group.
Remember, if there is anything that arises apart from school that may impact your child’s emotional stability in school, please let me know so that I can support them in school.
Be problem solvers and always seek for a peaceful resolution,
Ms. Cooper-Shaw, School Counselor
National Reading Month Student Book Clubs
Students at CFK/CFKN will have the opportunity to participate in book clubs to celebrate National Reading Month, March. The purpose is to encourage a love of reading and to allow students the chance to engage in discussions with their peers about books. The book clubs will be hosted by Mrs. Clarke, the literacy coach.
March 2nd-9th-Book Club Sign up-Students will choose which book they would like to read and sign up for that book club.
The deadline for signing up for a book club is March 9.
*Students should begin reading as soon as they get their book.
The book choices are
Freckle Juice: This book will be appropriate for most of our 1st and 2nd grade students.
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes: This book will be best for 2nd-4th graders. It is set in Japan after World War 2. It is beautifully written but does talk about a very sad topic, so keep that in mind when signing up.
My Life as a Book: This book will be best for 3rd-4th graders. It is a modern story set during the California wildfires. It is a longer read so students will need to commit to reading consistently in order to finish.
The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia): This book will be best for 4th-5th grade students. It is a familiar fantasy story that is a fun read.
Bud, Not Buddy: This book will be best for 4th and 5th grade students. It is a classic that is set in the late 1930’s. It is funny and so sad all at the same time.
The grades do overlap some to give a broader range of text levels. Please be aware that each book club will be limited to 10 students per campus! Each student should begin reading as soon as they get their book. A discussion guide will come with each book to help students prepare to talk about their book when we meet during their lunch time!
