The OMS team of Aishani Ramoju,Prathysha Kothare, and Tanya Mehta were selected as the Northeast REGION TEAM out of thousands of entries in The ExploraVision National Competition, sponsored by Toshiba and National Science Teachers Association. The competition is for K-12 students and engages students to solve real world problems with a strong emphasis on STEM. The goal is to have students envision and communicate new technology that would be possible 20 years into the future through collaborative brainstorming and research of current science and technology. The team won for their idea called AB Scavenger: Game Changer in Alzheimer’s Treatment and is a nanorobot that carries a protein inhibitor to stop the plaque build-up in Alzheimer’s patients. They will now compete against 5 other teams and if they get a first or second place, they go to Washington DC, all expenses paid with their families for 4 days to receive their reward. To get this, the next step is to create an active website with a computer that Toshiba provides. They also have to make a prototype of their invention by April 1st. Their teacher advisor is Dianne Haberstroh. Congratulations are also extended to a team who won Honorable Mention in the competition (the only ones in the state of PA): Pierce Bell, Cole Dinbeck and Luke Gutman.
Congratulations to all Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional winners. Parkland High School had 34 first place winners including 4 perfect scores. Congratulations to PHS teachers Wendy Simpson and Melissa Goldstein who won awards at the Hybrid Learning Conference at LCCC! The conference involved multiple school districts, with over 150 teachers participating. Science teacher Wendy Simpson won the New Artist Award which is given "to a hybrid/blended teacher who makes a positive impact on students during their first year of hybrid instruction". Only two high school teachers received this award out of approximately 1,000. Math teacher Melissa Goldstein won the Legend Award which is given to a teacher "for his/her ongoing contributions and influence in the field of hybrid learning. They have actively mentored other educators." Only one of these awards was presented.
