Note From the Principal
Happy April, Gust Community!
We hope you had a refreshing and relaxing Spring Break and that students are ready to continue their learning with grit and zest for the last two months of school.
I want to begin by acknowledging our active Gust Community Partnership parent group. Thank you to all of the parents and teachers in attendance at our monthly meetings! Our next Gust Community Partnership meeting will be on April 2 at 9:00AM in the cafeteria and April 3 at 3:30PM in the library.
We have some exciting upcoming events planned for April with the first one being our annual April 12 “Father”-Daughter Dance. Grandfathers, uncles, and significant family members are welcome to be the escort! Please watch for the RSVP flyers being sent home.
Our very popular Community Resources Family Multicultural Night was cancelled due to the March snowstorm. Our new Multicultural Night event is on April 17. We will send home RSVP notices the first week of April.
The next few weeks are critical for students as we have our state testing known as CMAS. CMAS testing assesses student growth in reading, writing, and math. Our 5th Grade students also are assessed in science. These tests are important for the state, district and school as they provide data as to what gaps our students have with regard to expected grade level skills. As we begin testing, we would ask for the help of our parents in ensuring that students are at school on time during testing so they are able to take their tests without interruption. Additionally, cell phones are not permitted in the room during testing sessions and must be collected by teachers. Cell phones in the testing sessions will invalidate the tests and will have a negative impact on student test scores. It is recommended that cell phones be left at home during the testing window as we do not advise students keeping their cell phones in their backpacks. Thank you in advance for your help! The testing dates for CMAS are as follows:
Tuesday, April 9 through Friday, April 11 (Grades 3-5)
Tuesday, April 16 through Thursday, April 18 (Grades 3-5)
Friday, April 19 (Grades 4-5)
Gust uses the Gust Website, the Gust Facebook page, and the Gust Flyer App for smartphones (available on Google Play and Apple store) for our parent communication. Please be sure to download our App to receive notifications and check our Gust website regularly.
Thank you all for all you do to support our students and teachers at Gust!

CMAS State Testing Info
Dear Gust families:
We will begin the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments on April 9, 2019. These assessments focus on the knowledge and skills our kids need for success in our global economy, including skills such as analytical thinking and the ability to solve complex problems. The CMAS assessments focus on four different content areas depending upon the grade your child is in:
English Language Arts (ELA) and Math - 3rd, 4th, 5th grade
Spanish Language Arts (CLSA) – 3rd and 4th grade Spanish speaking students
Social Studies - 4th grade
Science - 5th grade
We want to help parents and families with information to support student success during this time. These assessments will give our teachers critical information to help our students be on track for college and career readiness and help us understand whether our students have the necessary skills to succeed after high school.
Assessment Tips: We ask parents and families to ensure their children get plenty of sleep and a healthy breakfast every day, but especially on assessment days.
Attendance: We also want to communicate that all students should be in school on-time, all day and every day, regardless of whether assessments are occurring or not. Important teaching and learning happens in between testing, so it is imperative that students are here. Our expectations remain around vacations and we expect parents to continue to plan vacations around the DPS calendar.
Make-Ups: Students do best when they are in their classroom environment for testing. In the event that your child has to miss a test session, they will have to make up the test another time and will be pulled during their instructional time to do so. In addition, due to our teachers needing to teach during all non-testing days, our paraprofessionals are used to give make-ups, which pulls them from supporting the classroom. To prevent disruption to your child’s and other student’s day, please make sure that your child is at school every day and limit their absences to only when they are sick.
We appreciate your support during this time. Assessments, including CMAS as well as those taken throughout the year, are vital tools for teachers to support student success. There are online resources to help parents and families support their student during CMAS testing, located at standards.dpsk12.org. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. Thank you, and go Tigers!
¡Gracias y vamos Tigres!

Early Childhood Education
Welcome back from Spring Break! During the month of April, we will be studying exercise and springtime! During this unit students will continue to work on writing their names and the sounds they hear in words, learning letters and sounds, counting orally to 20 and beyond as well as counting objects, and thinking critically about the stories their hear. While reading with your child at night, remember to ask questions and allow your child time to answer. Asking and answering questions is a necessary skill that will help your child to be better prepared for kindergarten! Also, please remember that April has some pretty turbulent weather and your child needs to be dressed appropriately.
Thank you,
The ECE Teachers
Third Grade/Tercer Grado
This month in math, we will circle back and review math skills taught early in the school year. The purpose of the review work is two-fold. We hope to deepen the students’ understanding of basic math skills (fractions, geometry, area, word problems, telling time), and we also want to help prepare them for upcoming state assessments (PARCC). At this point in the school year, your child should have memorized most single-digit multiplication and division facts. Please practice fact fluency with your child at home every night for at least 10 minutes.
In 3rd grade literacy, the students are currently preparing for the end of the year, CMAS/PARCC exams in reading and writing. These exams are very important, as they are a comprehensive look at each student’s mastery of grade level standards. Please help your student get plenty of rest and healthy food during the week of testing! After testing, we will be learning about water conservation around the world.
Tercer grado
Fourth Grade/Cuarto grado

Students are continuing to develop their skills in using Google Apps for Education. Currently students are learning about spreadsheets by creating Google sheets templates, then publishing their work using Flippity.net Thus far students have created memory games (see an example here, here, and a very challenging game here), hangman-style spelling games, and now are creating fun fonts. Other possibilities for using Flippity and Google Sheets include flashcards, scavenger hunts, timelines, and more. Look for these examples after spring break.

Feliz abril, Sra. Harlfinger
