General News! Week of October 11-14th
Welcome Back! We hope that you all were all able to weather the storm safely, and did not have too much damage to your homes. Today was the first day that students attended their 2nd quarter connections classes. If you have any questions or concerns about these, you will need to touch base with the guidance department.
With our most recent cancellation of school due to Hurricane Matthew, Dr. Hardin has received verbal approval to revise our current school calendar with regards to report cards. Report cards will not go home with students tomorrow, October 12 as originally planned. Our 2016-17 revised school calendar will reflect the report card date change officially tonight in the board mtg. The revised report card date is now Monday, October 17.
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Oct. 12th- School Dance 2:30-4:30 (Permission slips need to be signed and returned by tomorrow/ $5 admission)
October 17th- Report cards go home (This is the new adjusted date)
Oct. 20th- 7th & 8th Grade Honor Roll Breakfast 8:45- 9:15
Oct. 31st- Federal Impact Forms go home with students
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will begin our journey into "The Thrill Of Horror". We will examine why the horror genre both terrifies and fascinates us. The literary terms that we were going to be testing on at the end of last week will be adjusted, and quizzed on early next week, so they should be visiting StudyStack to help keep these terms fresh in their minds. We will begin to utilize many of these terms as we explore the various pieces of literature along the way. Tone and Mood are our first focus.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Matthew also interrupted our viewing of the movie version of The Outsiders, so we are adjusting the schedule a bit, to view this as we continue to move along.
TweenTribune is not due this Friday, but will be back next week as a part of the nightly homework. I will be making a few adjustments to the assignments, but the due dates will continue to be Friday afternoons by 3 pm.
The first Independent (Choice) Reading book for 2nd quarter will be due by Friday October 29th. We had 29 students who successfully completed their 2 Choice Reading books for 1st quarter. We will be celebrating with an ice cream sundae party! I hope to see many more join in our 2nd quarter celebration...this is a very simple goal to accomplish, and the benefits that result from this practice are too many to mention. Choice reading books should take your child from 7-10 days to read if they are reading for 20-30 minutes regularly. They have 3 weeks to complete their books and take a quick comprehension check. Please help them make this part of their regular routine. I will be happy to help them divide their books into daily sections if that helps them..let's just get READING...it is exercise for the mind!
Thanks for all you do at home! Have a great week!
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
Due to the storm, we are spending another week covering the end of the American Revolution and moving into America’s first attempt at a government. It will parallel the development of Georgia’s first attempt at self rule.
Math- Mrs. McKinney
In math we are learning about exponent rules this week. Look for homework most nights.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, students will be finishing up a series of four projects on Matter. I’m so proud of how hard the kids have been working on creating their own lessons! Thursday we will start presentations of these lessons, which will serve as an awesome review for the upcoming mastery assessment over everything we have learned this year so far in my class. Speaking of the mastery assessment, every student in my class should continue nightly study of their study guide. The assessment has been moved to Friday, October 21st. If your student has misplaced their study guide, no worries! They can always log in to my google classroom and pull up the jeopardy game, a blank copy of the study guide, and even a copy of the questions with the answer key! They should have no excuse for not studying, as I have provided them with all the resources. I can’t wait to let the kids show off what they have worked so hard on these past two weeks! J
