Something to Yelle About
Weekly Newsletter for the Henri A. Yelle Elementary
Mr. G's #ShadowAStudent Day Students from Friday, March 8
For the Week of March 11 through 15
What a quick week it has been! I know we missed Monday with the snow, but it just flew by.
On Friday, March 8, I shadowed 5 students -- 3 5th Graders and 2 4th Graders for the day. I went bus stop to bus stop to experience the day as a Yelle student might.
I started doing #ShadowAStudent Day 4 years ago, and I have always treasured the knowledge I gain from what I am able to witness.
I have included a Wakelet link below to my full experience. Please check it out.
Our Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week on Wednesday and Thursday, please sign-up using the link below. We hope to see all of you at some point during the two days.
Also, see information on our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair, the It Takes a Community Kathy Bailey Basketball Game on Friday, March 8, our Kindness Sneaker Drive, our upcoming Math Family Fun Night, and more.
Please continue to check out this newsletter either through your email, Twitter, or from the Yelle website, and please let me know if you would like or need more updates and/or communication from our school.
Have a great weekend.
Thanks,
Marty

Yelle Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences on March 13 & 14
Our Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner on next Wednesday, March 13, from 5 to 7:45PM, and then again, on Thursday, March 14, our half-day (early dismissal 11:40AM) with conferences from 12 to 6PM.
For our Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences, we will again be using PTCFast.com to make signups as convenient as possible for you. This system helps to make scheduling simple for families to be able to choose a time that works for them.
Please click or enter the following web address into your browser window:
https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/hayspring2019
Once you get to the website, you will select your child’s teacher/teacher team. Here you enter your name, child’s name, and email address. You will then receive an email to pick your conference time-slot.
These conferences are only one way for us to keep an open line of communication between school and home. Please know that sometimes the short 10-minute window might not be enough time to fully discuss your child’s present situation, so utilize the conference time to set up another time to meet.
You may have received a letter personally from your child's teacher about signing up for these conferences.
Any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
An Awesome Night At Altitude
Great news about the Family Fun Night at Altitude from Friday, March 1! Victor gave us our numbers so far.
"You guys had close to 120 jumpers here and everything had moved you up to higher tiers of give back. Right now you are at a total of $857.50 give back plus some others has you close to $1000 and we still have through April vacation. Great job."
Again, if you still want to purchase tickets to support the Yelle, when you go to purchase a ticket, say you are purchasing for Yelle, or when you are online at https://www.altitudenorthattleboro.com/ click on Buy a Pass, and after picking your date, select as one of the choices -- "Yelle" with the time of your jumping.
Thank you!
Thanks again to all of the PTO and Yelle Families for making this night a huge success! Thank you, especially, to Mr. Geoghegan for taking time out of his Friday night (and in the opposite direction from his home) to join in the fun.
Thanks everyone!
Liz
Yelle Scholastic Book Fair -- March 11th Through March 15th
Dear Yelle Families,
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming next week, March 11-15. It is a great way to celebrate and encourage reading among our students, and the Book Fair also helps to raise funds to purchase books and enrichment materials for our school. All students will have an opportunity to visit the Book Fair during their usual library class time (see schedule below-some classes moved to different slots just for the week). Volunteers are needed (1 ½ hour shifts, typically) to help cover all of the hours of the Book Fair. Please sign up using the following link if you are able to help out. We rely on many volunteers to ensure that the Book Fair is a success!
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0b45a4ac2ca0fd0-hayscholastic1
The Book Fair will also be open during Parent Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, March 13 (5-7:45 PM) and Thursday, March 14 (12-6 PM). Acceptable payments include cash, credit cards, and checks made payable to HAY Elementary PTO (change may be given in cash).
NEW Payment Option: You may also use your credit card to set up a Scholastic eWallet for your student. Once you set it up online, your student can shop the book fair without bringing cash or checks to school! Set up your eWallet at our school’s Book Fair website BEFORE your student visits the fair: http://www.scholastic.com/bf/henriayelleelementarysch1 (Scroll down to the eWallet symbol and click the Get Started button.).
You may also shop the Book Fair ONLINE any time March 4-20. All orders placed from now through the first day of the in-school Book Fair (3/11) will be shipped FREE to the school during Book Fair Week. All orders placed from the second day of the in-school Fair (3/12) through the end of the online shopping period (3/20) will be delivered to the school FREE after the Online Fair concludes. See our school’s Book Fair website to shop online. http://www.scholastic.com/bf/henriayelleelementarysch1
Teachers will be compiling Classroom Wish Lists. If you would like to purchase a book for your child’s teacher, please see the easel at the entrance of the Book Fair! Purchasing a book for your child’s teacher is a great way to help expand your child’s teacher’s classroom library!
All proceeds from the Scholastic Book Fair will directly benefit the Yelle Library and school!
We hope to see you at the Book Fair!

Mr. Geoghegan's Shadow A Student Experience
This is an experience Mr. G has been doing as a Principal for the past 4 years.
It is the brainchild of SchoolRetool, who wants administrators to see what a student would typically experience in a full day of school.
I can tell you that it was an amazing experience. I may try to get into classes each and every day, but doing a whole day is simply incredible.
Please click this link to see a Wakelet story of the Tweets from my #ShadowAStudent experience.
Thank you to all the teachers, parents, and of course students who allowed me an amazing glimpse into their daily school world.
Just a Twitter Taste ...
Notice all the little stickers of emoji's of our students' Acts of Kindness.
One Week Left -- Keep Spreading Speaker Brian Williams's Message of Kindness
Hello Yelle Parents!
One week left. Our Kindness Challenge ends on Friday, March 15!
We are SUPER EXCITED to announce that our school has taken on a massive kindness challenge and it launched with an assembly we just had the week before Break on Tuesday, February 12, in two great presentations of Brian Williams from ThinkKindness to our students.
The Yelle invited, through the generous support of our HAY PTO, one of the nation's Top Youth Speakers, Brian Williams, to challenge our kids to a massive 15 Day Kindness challenge. Brian speaks to over 100,000 students each year, he has documented over 1.5 million acts of kindness, traveled to Africa 14 times and collected over 500,000 pairs of sneakers for needy children and families. Brian is the founder of Think Kindness, a non-profit that inspires measurable acts of kindness in schools across the country.
THE CHALLENGE = KINDNESS EXPLOSION
The entire student body WAS challenged to start carrying-out acts of kindness in the halls, classrooms, at home and throughout the community. Each student will continue to receive daily kindness challenges through our Announcements from our Yelle Student Council as well as some unique ways to document their acts through their Kindness Journals and then on the windows in the Main Foyer. So don’t be shocked if you see a little more Kindness around the house.
Challenge #2 – Global Impact
During the assembly, students heard stories, saw pictures and watched a video of kids their own age in Kenya. But one big difference, is that these children have never worn a pair of shoes in their life! Brian challenged the entire school to collect gently used sneakers that will be sent to needy children and families around the globe. So go throughout your closet to see if you have any sneakers you don’t wear anymore. (also ask your friends, family and neighbors!) Important – we are only collecting sneakers. Please don’t bring boots, flip-flops, slippers, etc.
To help us make an even bigger impact, we want to ask you to engage in conversations with your students about the subject of Kindness. Ask them about what they’ve done, acknowledge what they do, and encourage the simple life skill of Kindness each and every day.
This was such a powerful assembly for our students. They are so excited and our Yelle Student Council is even more excited to keep Brian's message going to keep doing Acts of Kindness for the next few weeks (and then hopefully throughout the rest of the year).
Think Kindness!
See a couple videos of Brian challenging our students and also some great pictures of the assemblies below.
