Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that mails high-quality books to children from birth until their 5th birthday regardless of their family’s income. “The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school,” states the National Commission on Reading.
Financial Donations made through the Blue River Community Foundation have allowed this wonderful program to be offered in our community! Each month, registered children who live in Southwestern’s school district will receive an age appropriate book in the mail, addressed to them, at no cost to the family. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. to make many wonderful books in the program available in braille and audio format for children who are blind or visually impaired in order for all children to benefit from these wonderful books.

You and your child can easily report tips on bullying, harassment, drugs, vandalism, or any safety issue you're concerned about through SafeSchools Alert. Every tip SafeSchools Alert receives about our district is immediately logged in the system and our administration is notified so that they can investigate and take appropriate action. And, tips may also be submitted anonymously if you prefer. Together, using SafeSchools Alert, we can make our district a safer place to work and learn! Thanks in advance for your support!

Southwestern Food Service Department
A Message from the Food Service Director
For those of you that do not know me or have not met me yet, my name is Samantha Carson. I have been with you now for approximately 90 days as the Food Service Director. What an AMAZING experience thus far! Yes, we are all walking through lots of "new normals" and "unknowns;" however, being able to serve alongside some great people during this time has redefined what community means. For that, I am grateful!
As we continue to adapt and adjust, I just want you to know that my main focus is to serve YOU, our STUDENTS, and STAFF to the best of my ability. As this school year has come to an end, I just want to reach out to you with any questions, suggestions, or concerns that pertain to the food service department. COVID-19 has brought us all to a different place of how we view sanitation, socialization, and how we generally function. COVID-19 has brought things to a new level of awareness as it pertains to how we operate as a department. One of the concerns is how we handle cash for our lunch deposits.
Please be aware that we will no longer receive cash at the registers during lunch service at either school. We are installing a mounted lock/deposit box that will be outside of the cafeterias. Please send in lunch money in a sealed envelope with full name and ID number located on the outside of the envelope. There will be envelopes at the box for students to put money in and fill out if needed.
The deposits will be collected each morning and entered for that day. If the student puts their lunch money in after the deposits are collected, those funds will not be entered until the next day. If a student's lunch account is going to go into the negative or is in the negative the student WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE a lunch of choice entree, two fruits, two veggie options, and a milk, but no extras/a la carte.
As we all grow through this together I am sure there will be new implementations as we enter into next year however I will communicate with you through the Southwestern School Corporation Facebook page, newsletters, and emails to make sure any pertinent information is communicated ahead of time as best I can.
Again let me know of any questions, suggestions, or concerns!
Samantha Carson

We would love to share your positive stories that include personal achievements of your child such as serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, earning awards or recognition in 4-H, earning badges in Girl Scouts, etc, etc. You may just see your story in a future edition of "The Spartan Special" or in The Shelbyville News!
