School Routines
September, 2013
Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to the new school year! My name is Mrs. Bernice Pollock and I will be your child’s Grade 2 teacher. I have taught Grade 2 for three years in Canada and this is my third year teaching Grade 2 at TIS. I am looking forward to meeting and working with both you and your child.
Agendas - TIS believes that open communication between teachers and parents is essential. An agenda will be sent home every day with your child. If you would like to communicate with me (for example, any changes in your child’s regular routine), or me with you, please write a note in the agenda. Please sign your child’s agenda daily.
Homework Books - Students will also receive a homework book in which to complete their assignments. Please support your child to ensure that homework is completed neatly and to the best of his or her ability. Homework books are due every Monday. Another note will follow on homework expectations.
School Times - School starts at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:05 p.m. If your child is late by more than 5 minutes, he or she must go to the office to get a late slip. If your child is unable to attend school, please inform the office. Students need to be picked up immediately after school and cannot be left unsupervised in the playground. Just a reminder that only English is to be spoken on campus.
Snacks - Students will be able to take snacks outside for recess this year. Please provide your child with healthy (and as much as possible, litterless) snacks. Also, please provide a good quality water bottle that they can keep in the classroom. Water will be the only drink allowed in the class.
Uniforms/Hats - School uniforms must be worn at all times. This includes correct shoes and socks. Please ensure that your child brings a TIS hat to school, as students will not be allowed to play outside without one. Also, please write your child’s name in his or her uniform, hat, backpack, etc.
Library - Library will be on Fridays. Each child may take out two books for the week. Students are required to take an Accelerated Reader quiz for each library book they sign out. Accelerated Reading tests are to be done at school. There are blue Accelerated Reader forms to fill out for each book. Library books need to be returned to class before the following Friday.
Home Reading - Students should read their 2 library books as part of home reading. They will also have an account on the RAZ Kids online reading program. With this program, they should listen, read, and then do a quiz on two books a week as well. They can do these quizzes online.
Gym - Gym classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday. They should be wearing their gym uniform on these days.
Birthdays - Birthdays are an exciting time for children. If you wish to send a small snack to celebrate your child’s birthday, please check with me for an appropriate time during the day. Please send individual servings (ie cupcakes, cookies, Rice Krispie squares) that may be easily distributed. Please remember we are a peanut aware school. Also, please note that invitations to private birthday parties should be distributed outside of school hours to honour and respect the feelings of all children.
Volunteers - We will require parent volunteers for various activities throughout the year. Please let us know if you are available to help out!
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to put a note in your child’s agenda, send me an email at bernice.pollock@tis.edu.mo, or call the school at 2853 - 3700 and leave a message. Please not that messages will only be checked regularly at the end of the day.
I look forward to an exciting learning experience this year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bernice Pollock
