April Holidays
Passover is a Jewish Spring Holiday, known as “The Feast of Unleavened Bread.” It is celebrated by Jewish people for 7 or 8 days. This year it begins in the evening of Friday, April 15 and ends in the evening of Saturday, April 23. The significance of Passover is to celebrate freedom from slavery. To learn more about Passover, visit this page full of resources compiled by the district.
This upcoming week is also known as Holy Week for many Christians.
Palm Sunday- the Sunday immediately prior to Easter. It commemorates Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem when followers laid palm leaves across the road to greet him.
Holy Thursday- also known as Maundy Thursday, is the celebration of Jesus' Last Supper with his 12 Apostles
Good Friday- the day in which Jesus' crucifixion is observed
Easter Sunday- celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. To learn more about Easter and its history and traditions, please visit this page full of resources compiled by the district.
This update has been brought to you by the Parents in Equity Group. If you have a resource that you would love to share, an idea for a display you would like to see brought to life, or input on how our school community can continue to recognize and honor the diverse backgrounds of our students, please reach out to Jenn Svetlik (jennifer.svetlik@gmail.com) or Megan Briggs (mbriggsis@gmail.com), who proudly serve as our school’s Parents in Equity Representatives.
We are always looking for fresh voices and perspectives from parents who are interested in getting more involved with bringing our district’s vision of cultural proficiency to life within each building.
Autism Acceptance Month
Did you know that Autism is diagnosed as much as 4x more frequently in boys than in girls, partially because of a lack of understanding for how symptoms present themselves in females? As a community, let’s use this month to learn more about the characteristics of autism, and use that knowledge to promote kindness and understanding for all types of neurodiversity.
Please take some time this month to explore this page full of resources put together by the NPSD, as we all celebrate Autism Acceptance Month together. There are links to great TED Talks, books, and more educational resources to share with your family.
Ramadan
April also marks the beginning of Ramadan. Ramadan is a holy month of fasting, introspection, and prayer for Muslims, the followers of Islam. During this time, many students in our district will fast during daylight hours in accordance with their religious tradition. The district has put together an amazing page full of resources here, where we can learn more about the celebrations and traditions of Ramadan.

In April and May we are going to be putting up StoryWalks on the fence outside of the school, and could use a few extra hands.
Please email Jenn at jennifer.svetlik@gmail.com about how you can help!
April Counselor's Corner
It’s hard to believe the month of March is behind us! I have found through the years that March tends to be a time of heightened stress and big feelings. One of the most important messages I share with students is that all feelings are okay to experience. We all feel sad, angry, and frustrated from time to time. Sometimes these emotions are easier to handle than others. Big feelings happen and it’s important to allow our children to express themselves and learn to manage their big feelings appropriately.
Please see the following visual and linked article on tips for managing big emotions.

Home & School Meeting News
One topic discussed was safety. The safety of the community is the most important goal during drop-off and pick-up. We all have a responsibility to see that every child is safe. In addition, we need to keep traffic moving to facilitate student arrival and dismissal in a timely way. It is imperative that the procedures below are observed.
Another topic of discussion was the need for volunteers. YA Home & School Association has many ideas for spring events. Please consider taking the lead or joining a group to help these ideas come to fruition. We appreciate any availability you may have. To get involved, please send an email to yahomeandschool@gmail.com.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Arrival
All drop offs in the car line are in front of the main entrance between the orange cones. Please pull your car up to the large sign carried by our 6th grade safety.
Do not park your car or exit your car in the car line.
Keeping safety in mind, please do not go around vehicles in front of you and do not attempt to back up your vehicle.
As the space in front of you becomes available, the next set of vehicles will pull forward and drop off their child(ren).
When in the car line, please practice patience. Parents should not exit their vehicle in order to keep the car line moving. Staff members are available to assist the students with their backpacks or any other item they need to get out of the vehicle.
Dismissal
Pull up between the cones for pick up. Do not park and leave your car in the car line.
You can move forward to pull up between the cones as the cars in front of you leave.
If you park across the street or elsewhere, please exit your vehicle and wait for your child on school property.
Please cross the street at a corner to return back to your car. Do not run across the street.
Please be careful when pulling out of your parking spot and watch for other vehicles and our walkers.
