Heights Happenings
Winston Heights PS - Term 2, Week 4 2022
Principal's Message
On Monday 9 May, I had the opportunity to attend the Zone Cross Country Carnival and watch our school team participate. What a fabulous group of athletes, who should be very proud of their achievements. Congratulations to all students who attended this event and represented our school. Mrs Kennedy, our team manager, was full of praise for your sporting capabilities and your safe, respectful and responsible behaviour on the day.
NAPLAN
Over the last two weeks, our school has been participating in NAPLAN. This year assessments were completed online. Students in Year 3 and Year 5 participated in this point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard on that day. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress. Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 5 students on your calm composure throughout the NAPLAN.
Band Camp
We are very excited to for our 2022 Band Camp at the Crusaders Conference and Activity Centre, Galston. Band Camp is taking place on Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 May 2022. Students are to arrive at school between 7:30am - 7:45am, proceeding directly to the school hall. The buses depart at 8:15am. A final note has been distributed to all band families with important information on COVID guidelines. This must be returned to Mrs Sim for your child to attend. A note about what to bring has also been distributed and parents/carers and students should refer to this when packing. If you require any information about camp, please do not hesitate to contact the band committee or front office for clarification.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, one which could not take place without the dedication and commitment of our teachers, parents, tutors and band master. Thank you!
We look forward to hearing all about the excitement that took place during band camp upon your return.
Peer Support
Strategic Direction 3 of our School Improvement Plan focuses on developing a school-wide collective responsibility for student learning, wellbeing and success. To enhance wellbeing this term, students K-6 will be participating in Peer Support. At WHPS we maximise opportunities for students to connect, succeed and thrive, with Peer Support providing all students the opportunity to broaden their connections across our school in a safe and structured format. It also places our Stage 3 students at the centre of their learning, supporting connections with teachers and peers, while allowing them to take on a leadership role. For all students, Peer Support encourages an optimistic sense of self, builds positive relationships with peers and empowers them to develop a better understanding of their responsibility for self and others.
This program is coordinated by Mrs Laura Booth (Relieving AP - Stage 3) and the Stage 3 teachers. If you have further questions about Peer Support, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mrs Booth.
Assemblies
School assemblies are a wonderful celebration of student achievement and help to develop a feeling of unity and a positive school culture among the community. We appreciate the patience and understanding of the community with respect to COVID-19 and the guidelines that have been in place to keep everybody safe. Parents/Carers are now invited to attend the assemblies identified in the table below. Please understand these will occur in a planned and COVID safe way and some restrictions will apply:
- Please enter and exit via the lollipop gate and proceed straight to the school hall.
- Parents will not be seated with students and must remain in the designated seating areas.
- Masks are encouraged where social distancing cannot be maintained, and hand sanitiser will be available upon entry.
- If parents/carers are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms they are not to attend school or assemblies.
- Close contacts are advised to follow the advice of NSW Health.
For your planning and information school assemblies occur on Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm. Students attend assemblies in stage cohorts on a fortnightly basis. Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students attend on odd weeks, Stage 2 and Stage 3 students the even weeks. There are times where school assemblies can be disrupted by other school events. We endeavour to keep assemblies on Thursday. If the day must change, the community will be notified.
Local Park
Recently we have noticed some of our students enjoying the park near the back gate after 3:00pm. Local parks are a fabulous place for all people to relax, connect with others, engage in physical activity and have loads of fun! It is wonderful to see children enjoying the great outdoors. Parks are safest for our children when parents/carers are present and supervising their activity. If your child is using the park equipment after school, I encourage you to monitor their play this will help keep them and others safe too. Understandably, as children get older they naturally demand more independence and, at some point, they will want to do more things without their parents/carers. If your child walks home from school via the back gate, please talk with them about their personal responsibility for making safe decisions, including walking straight home instead of stopping to play in the park without parent/carer supervision.
