Hamilton Boys' High School -Term 3, Edition 1, July 2019

Farewell to Sam & Josh

Big picture

Two of our three GAP students Sam Cardosi (Northern Ireland) and Josh Goodwin (England) seen here proudly wearing their Chiefs jerseys, presented to them at our final House meeting of the term by Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead (Head Prefect), with funds received from the boys after a recent mufti sign-out weekend. They will be missed by us all as they both contributed so much to Argyle and Grove. The boys loved them.

Start of Term 3, Teacher Only Day, Armed Offenders Training Evening, Years 9 & 10 Report Evening

I'm sure all boys have enjoyed spending some quality time with their families or homestays over the past fortnight and are ready to face the challenges of a new school term within the hostel.

Teacher Only Day

A reminder of the scheduled Teacher Only Day on Monday 22nd July, so the hostel will re-open from 5.30pm on Monday. All boys are expected to have returned by 7.30pm on Monday evening or 8.00am on Tuesday morning. Please use Boardingware to state your son’s return day and time for the start of the new term. This is particularly important for those boys that are returning in a vehicle. There will be no evening meal on Monday 22nd July.

Report Evening

The Years 9 and 10 Report Evening is scheduled for Wednesday 24th July, from 4.30 - 7.00pm. You are welcome to have your son attend with you so you can both hear the feedback from your son's teachers.

Kind regards

Armed Offenders Training Evening. 32 Argyle boys signed up so far, 18 more needed

Email sent to all Parents/Caregivers Monday 8th July

I was approached by the Waikato Armed Offenders Squad on Friday 5th July requesting up to 50 of our hostel boys to act as role players for a training exercise to be conducted between 6.30 - 7.30pm on Thursday 25th July on school grounds.

For more specific information please read the 'Parent Information & Consent Form' download the attachment below. There is no obligation for your son to commit to this exercise.

Any of the boys’ wanting to participate as role players in the training evening will need to have their Parents/Caregivers sign the attached form. This is a requirement from Police headquarters.

This can either be scanned and emailed to me or handed in to the hostel reception desk when your son returns on Monday evening 22nd July. The first 50 returned will make up the exercise group of boarders.

Thank you for your support.

Feedback from Hostel Lockdown PRACTICE DRILL, Tuesday 2nd July, 7.30pm

Argyle House conducted a Lockdown PRACTICE EXERCISE DRILL on Tuesday 2nd July at 7.30pm.

All boys were provided with instruction at our Tuesday House meeting, as to how they should respond should the Police request we go into lockdown due to a threat within close vicinity of the hostel or if an intruder enters the hostel displaying threatening behaviour.

Everything went smoothly apart from the automated text message alert failing to go out to all boys, staff and staff partners. Fortunately, it was only a drill, and allowed us to remedy this the following day.

All Parents/Caregivers were notified by email that we were currently conducting a PRACTICE DRILL and that a further update would be emailed out once the drill was completed. Once completed, all boys were released and a roll call conducted in our evacuation assembly area out in front of Dorm 1. Thanks to those of you that replied to the emails.

Another PRACTICE DRILL will be initiated within the next fortnight to ensure the text message is simultaneously sent with the activation of the voice direction and lockdown sound. I will keep you informed of the due date and time in advance.

Intentions Form 2020

Please download, print, scan and return this form to Mrs Katrina McLaughlin by Friday 6th September. Thank you.

Name & Number all Clothing Items

A plea from Mrs Kaye Nonoa, Laundress, and Mrs Cecelia Lake, Matron:

Can all Parents/Caregivers please take a sharpie pen to all clothing items and write your son's laundry number AND initials on them before returning on Monday evening.

Thank you.

Mobile Phone Cabinet for Years 9 & 10 Boarders

Big picture
The labelled mobile phone cabinet has been secured to the wall in the main reception area. This system will be in operation from the first day back. Thanks to Mr Jeff Harnish, a Hamilton BHS Tech Wood teacher, for designing and making this cabinet.

Each Year 9 & 10 boarder has until 9.05pm each Sunday - Thursday evening to place his phone in the correct slot. (It will be a bit later on a Friday evening).

The reasons for changing to this system:

1. To allow the Dorm Leaders to focus on getting their dorm ready for bed between 8.45pm (prep concludes) and 9.15pm (junior lights out), rather than the added responsibility of collecting in phones and boys stalling.

2. The junior boys will spend more time focussing on getting ready for bed between 9.05 - 9.15pm instead of remaining on their phones until it is almost lights-out.

3. It will enable the staff to complete an accurate check each night of who has handed in a phone.

A reminder that each boy is to return with only one phone.
