The Heart Behind Clubs
Our hope is that these regular gatherings of families with similar interests will result in lasting friendships for our students. You can participate in as many as you'd like, and your student's planning amount may be used to cover the cost of any clubs with a fee.
In-Person Clubs
CENTRAL COAST
Estuary Adventures (Morro Bay/Los Osos) (FULL)
Partnering with the Morro Bay Estuary Center we will experience the beauty of the estuary and learn about protecting its sensitive habitats and wildlife. We will meet at the Nature Center on the Embarcadero as well as at various locations throughout Morro Bay and Los Osos. At the Nature Center, we will view aquariums of steelhead trout and eelgrass, learn about the threats they face, learn about the watershed that supplies it with freshwater, use a topographic sandbox to learn about watersheds and the movement of water, and much more! Field trips and conservation activities will include: Belly biology – looking under docks to see what’s growing, the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History, Kayaking in the bay, The Elfin Forest nature preserve, and Tidepool Exploration.

Adventure Learning Club (Lompoc) (FULL)
The Adventure Learning Club is designed to spark students' curiosity by exploring outdoor locations while studying mathematical and scientific concepts. Each club will begin with a brief introduction to the topic we are exploring followed by a hike on a trail or local outdoor area to find items in nature that fit with our topic. In the middle of the hike, we will pause for the students to make observations, write, draw, do an activity, or read a book together.
For: The activities will focus on grades 3-6, but anyone is welcome
When: 2nd Thursday of each month starting September 14th and ending May 9th from 1:00 to 2:30. The January meeting will be on the 3rd Thursday, January 18th.

SLO South Hiking Club (FULL)
Join us as we hike different trails in SLO County. This club is open to all ages!
For: TK-12th grade students
When: One Friday a month beginning at 10 am and ending between 12:00-12:30.

Aerospace & STEM Club (Santa Maria & Lompoc) (FULL)
The Aerospace & STEM Club gives opportunities to students of all ages to learn more about space & STEM. In our club, we are partnering with AIAA to organize online learning opportunities, tours at the base, and other aerospace & STEM field trips and get-togethers. There are opportunities later in the year for a science fair as well.
High School Students: You have extra opportunities through this club as well, such as travel and competitions.

Friendship Club - Santa Maria/Orcutt (FULL)
Students will meet up at a local park to learn and practice important social skills such as how to introduce oneself, the importance of making eye contact and smiling, how to be a good friend and have empathy for others, etc. We will play games to help facilitate interaction between shy students, such as Getting to Know You Bingo, and hold both small and large group discussions. The goal of this club is to help our students get to know one another and make long-lasting friendships. After each week's lesson, students will have the opportunity to play on the playground and interact with each other in unstructured play (with adult supervision).

Rules for a Knight High School Club - Santa Maria/Orcutt (FULL)
We will meet on Fridays to discuss and share "Rules for a Knight" by Ethan Hawke. It will be an opportunity to socialize, spend time with our peers and perhaps play a game or two. Every student will be required to purchase the book and have some sort of journal available. This is a drop-off club. Students do not need a chaperone. A drop-off waiver will need to be completed for each student.

A monthly hang out for 6-9th graders in the SLO area. We will meet at a coffee shop for games and hangout once a month. Other activities will be planned (kayaking, a dance, etc) that can be signed up for separately that may have a cost for another time each month.

History Day - Kern County (FULL)
History Day is an interdisciplinary program that encourages students to research and prepare papers, exhibits, posters, performances, and documentaries on an annual historical theme. Students learn to be historical detectives and sharpen their skills as writers, artists and performers.
As a club, we will meet together monthly to share our progress on our research, projects and develop our historical thinking skills.
Students will have an opportunity to present their History Day projects with Heartland students, parents and staff in January 2024 and may have the opportunity to present their projects at the Kern County competition in March 2024.

Heartland’s Creative Writing Club is a positive and fun space for 7th-12th graders to connect to peers and write creatively. We respect, inspire, and encourage one another, pointing out each other's strengths while we satisfy the prompts, listen, and respond to one another’s writings. Bakersfield Games Club (FULL)
During our meetings there will be game stations where students can explore various types of games - boards, movement, cards, dice, paper & pencil, etc. All of the games will be focused on our month's theme. Some of our possible themes (or focus areas of study) are: writing, reading, basic math facts, geometry, life science, chemistry, physics, earth & space science, fine arts, geography, US history, and world history. For example, if our theme is writing games there might be stations for games like: Scrabble, Boggle, Story Cubes, Balderdash, Scattergories, writing round robins, etc.

Bakersfield Battle of the Books: 4-6 Grades Kern County (FULL)
Battle of the Books is a national event where students compete to see who has the best knowledge of the assigned books. The competition is a culminating event at the end of the school year. I plan on hosting monthly book club-type meetings to discuss, plan, and prepare for the battle.

Friendship Club - Tehachapi (OPEN)
Hello Tehachapi Friends! This club is designed to help students to make friends with other students in the Tehachapi area. We will meet at Central Park and start with an icebreaker, game, reading activity or team-building activity. After that's done, the students will have some free time to play at the park.

Outdoor Club - Tehachapi (FULL)
We will meet monthly to learn about native plants and wildlife, learn outdoor safety, record observations in a nature journal and just enjoy the outdoors in the Tehachapi mountains. We will incorporate hikes into some of our warmer month meetings. The hikes will be easy to moderate and all ages are welcome. This is a family club - parents/chaperones must accompany students.

Heartland Ridgecrest Yearbook Club (FULL)

Ridgecrest Activity Club, or RAC, will host monthly activities for students of all ages to enjoy. Depending on the weather our events range from crafting to nature hikes, book discussions, or even kickball games! RAC's aim is to provide fun and engaging activities for students to learn the skill of cooperative learning and build deeper friendships.

VISALIA
Filmmakers Club - Visalia (FULL)
Students will have the chance to meet together and collaborate on film making/editing. Meetings will be virtual and in-person. We will go over some basic film-editing techniques, and students will be able to create and share their own projects. Students will also have the option of entering one of their films into the Slick Rock Film Festival, run by Tulare County Office of Ed.

We will go on various nature hikes. Nature journaling is welcome. Some hikes will be the BL land in Three Rivers, Bravo Lake, Kaweah Oaks, Dry Creek Preserve, hike behind Lake Success, and a couple of hikes in National Parks.

Travel the world through delightful children’s picture books! Introduce your homeschooling K-3rd children to world geography and culture with award-winning literature. We'll travel through France, Spain, Italy, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, and Great Britain.

Kings County Game Club (Hanford) (FULL)
Meets monthly to play a variety of games and connect with other families in Kings County. We can play everything from boardgames to pickleball. Bring your favorite games to share!

Porterville Area Park Day (FULL)
Are you interested in building connections with local homeschool families in the Porterville area? Come join our monthly park day so you can meet other students and learning coaches. We will share a book and activity as well as time for unstructured play and interaction.

VIRTUAL CLUBS
The Spelling Bee - Virtual (FULL)
Students who want to test and challenge their spelling abilities are invited to join Heartland's school-wide spelling bee. The spelling bee will be held virtually via Zoom where a single winner has the opportunity to compete in the Scripps regional spelling bee. According to Scripps rules, only students in 4th through 8th grade are eligible.

Academic Pentathlon - Virtual (FULL)
Social Science: History of Computers
Science: An introduction to neuroscience/technology and neuroscience.
Fine Arts: Technology and art. Musical works used in science-fiction films
Literature: Critical reading, selected shorter works, and a thematic novel (not yet announced) Math: General mathematics (geometry and algebra concepts)

Academic Decathlon - Virtual (FULL)
Academic Decathlon is an AG Elective for 9th-12th Grade and it is also a competition. Students study a new theme every year across many topics (Social Studies, Science, Art, Music, Literature, Math, and Economics). This year we will be studying Technology and Humanity.
Social Science: History of Computers
Science: An introduction to neuroscience/technology and neuroscience
Art: Technology and art
Music: Musical works used in science-fiction films
Literature: Critical reading, selected shorter works, and The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin
Economics: Fundamental economics and will include a thematic section on technology, innovation, and the economy
Math: General mathematics, geometry, and an introduction to differential calculus
For: 9th-12th grade
When: Fridays 9-10 am

Heartland ASB Leadership (FULL)
This is a great opportunity for high school-age students to learn about leadership and then practice the skills they learn. They can even get AG elective credit by doing a few projects! Meetings will be 1 Friday each month and the project you use to practice your skills is up to you! We are also in charge of LAUNCH and our school yearbook, if those are things you would love to be a part of.
